Let's talk Cuckoo and WHITE marans... breeding strategies...

I was trying to work on my whites but the rooster is broody. Seriously not just sweet talking the hens either. He has a few more days left until his first hatch. I let him have six eggs because eh wouldn't stop upsetting the hens when they were trying to lay. He would stalk them trying to steal their egg as soon as it was lain. Goofiest thing I have ever seen.

Wow. If my boys did that, I won't have to eat them!
Seriously though, he does his manly job otherwise, right? He does know he's a he...?

Very strange.

ETA: That's what they mean when they say double mutant!

This is hilarious! I've never seen or heard of a rooster that did this. Maybe he's part seahorse!

I guess he figured it all like this: If you girls won't have my babies, I'll do it myself.

This is really funny!

It is strange, I saw him sitting myself or I never would have believed it. He is a beautiful Roo too so hopefully he will get his fill and get back to business!

He is pretty funny. Have you ever watched a broody when she gets up to eat and drink? How they fluff up and runn real fast with their wings fanned? He does that to some extent but he cant help but stop to try to top any hen that crosses his path.

A guy I met that raises OEG said his top roo hatches eggs with the hen and broods the chicks as well. I am not too concerned about him breeding right now I am sure he wil be fine when he gets back in a breeding pen. "The broody" has broke out like wildfire in my barn I have 9 hens 1 duck and 1 turkey sitting along with Mr McBroody....I like to imagine their nightly conversations.

I thought I would have to caponize to get one to sit, now I have the ultimate roo. I just hope he doesn't get as mean as some of my mama hens when the chicks come out.

Cool I have some of those. This hen makes paints no matter whhich roo she is crossed to, Wheaten,Black Copper.

If they did show red I would just consider them Copper Splash and get rid of them.

They are only white with black spots even on thier eyelids..

Ihave noticed that when she breeds with a pink/slate legged copper roo the legs are pink/slate and with the Wheaten the legs are white. Her legs are almost black.

She sported from a very old line of WJ/CG Black coppers. They had been line bred for 6 years with no outside birds added.

Did I get any of her eggs

Eggs go to lockdown tonight.

Here is the group of chicks that we hatched out June 25th 2012. There are 7 in the pictures but the smallest splash chick didn't make it-it's the one my DD is touching. I also took a picture of the eggs that they hatched out of.

Here is the supervisor of the hatch!!
