Let's talk Cuckoo and WHITE marans... breeding strategies...

Sorry for any confusion that my last post may have caused. It was in reference to the beautiful White Marans pullet pictured in Post Number 1073. She is truely a beautiful White pullet. We would love to have her in our White Marans breeding program.

Popping in to let DMRippy know of the 4 hatched, 3 are cockerels !
Two blues, one with street sweepers, one brown (we talked about before) and a blue pullet.
So...yes I finally have some good cockerels !
Will post pics as soon as I can.

Hey yall I still would love to find someone with some hatching eggs of a good line of Cuckoo's with feathered legs. Anyone?

I just read you show schedule... busy busy. I am debating going back to Newnan... I missed so much last time. But that is a LONG haul with 2 kids in tow.

Our show season is always busy, but it is short lived here in the south. We show chickens from the end of Septemeber through March. The last show will be the South Texas State Fair in March. After that, it gets too hot to haul chickens up and down the road. We put everything down in breeding pens and get started hatching for the next season.

We did not go to Newnan last year, but are planning on going this year. It is a long haul for us too. We debated back and forth on going or not, but finally decided to enter the show. If the weather is permitting, we will be there. I am not sure what we will be hauling right now. We have to wait and see how the chickens get through the ugly weather between now and then. I hope to be able to show some of everything that we breed. Space on the trailer and time on the road will help me make some of the decisions.

Hi everyone! I'm happy to have found this thread. As many of us, I'm spending the winter days planning for next springs plan. I'm still trying to find a dual purpose breed that we enjoy and will work for us.

For those cuckoo marans breeders out there:

Our hatchery cuckoo marans girls are HUGE birds! We butchered a few of the girls in the fall and they had a lot of meat on them. The reason we butchered them was because they laid very small eggs (and rarely at that!).

Are your non-hatchery birds decent layers? I really like the marans breeds for meat, but have to stick with a breed that will lay a decent number of large eggs, too.

My Blue Cuckoo hens are HUGE too and lay JUMBO Eggs.... I love that about them. When they are laying in full swing the lay great here. I get 3-4 eggs a day from 4 hens. I am getting 1-2 eggs about 3 times a week right now.

Thanks for the reply - that's great to know! My BCM's are acceptable layers, so I was surprised that my hatchery cuckoos weren't.
