Let's talk Cuckoo and WHITE marans... breeding strategies...

Here is the daddy to our new chicks that are just drying off in the incubator:

we have 7 chicks-1 black(maybe a dark blue), 2 splash and 4 blue, didn't plan on doing another hatch but we collected 3 red golden pheasant eggs from our pair and we thought it would be neat to try and hatch the pheasant eggs- they weren't fertile but the Cuckoo Marans were.

he does have some gold leakage as you can see. I will try and get a couple of pictures of the 2 chicks that survived the cocci that they went through earlier this year. Have 1 pullet and 1 cockeral and they are about 3 months old now.

blue cuckoo lady?

I don't check this thread very often because for some reason, my computer is soooooo slow when trying to navigate throught Back Yard Chickens. IT is almost impossible for me to get through this site. I have no idea why it does this way. We are still here and still working with Cuckoos and Whites. We have a really nice set of Whites that we have hatched this season. We do not have as many Cuckoos, but we are working with a small number of breeders in that variety. Hopefully by this fall we will be able to hatch more Cuckoos.

So glad you are all still out there!!

Are you sure it is gold leakage or just "sunburn" Mine turn yelow if they get too much corn or sun. When they moult it all comes back to silver/white.

He is def blue cuckoo. I have hatched out a few blue chicks. I had to figure out which hen was making them. I have ony had black/standard until this year.

Check out this Blue Gold cuckoo guy...he is cool but I don't know what to do with him!!

Here are a couple of pictures of 3 month old chicks- we started out with 11 and ended up now with 2 due to cocci. not sure how they will develop as they were pretty sick- wasn't sure they would make it.

I like his type, he has a nice long back.

I know what you mean Ernie, I had 6 hens and three roos. I determined after several hatches that I can't use two of the hens because they are carrying blue and gold. One of the roos is carrying too much white and so that leaves me with 4 hens two roos. I also have a quad at my uncle's house from my old breeders so I am still hatching from them too.

I can't complain too much I have about 180 decent looking chicks coming along.....that is a bantam pullet in the background.

Did you find Cocci exceptionally common this season? I usually might have two or three out of a few hundred get it but this year I lost quite a few. It seemed to come on so fast that I coulnt save them. I was going nuts about it and power cleaning twice a week even.

Love the Cali's I am looking for some........trade you for an oddball cockerel and his twin brother. I had a few pullets come from that pair too. they are not as gold as my gold cuckoo from Fancy Chick but more bronze if that makes sense. I will have to wrangle one down to photo.

yeah, some of those chicks I have do have leg feathers, I'll have to look at them closer to see how many. To be honest, I've been watching the silvers more since I've already decided I'm selling the cuckoos.
