By the way, remember your worry about the chicks getting in and out of the nest? Well, I did roosting check a little later today, and all (well, I only saw two, but I imagine the third was under her, since I searched around and found nothing) were sleeping with Cruella in the nest. Strong little things, they are!
They used her as a stepping stone! :lau

So how can you tell, with a days old chick, that it has good conformation? And what colour it will be?

For conformation, just the basics. Not too big, not very small, on the medium side. A little fluffier on the top of the head, so good crest (something that my line is lacking). Comb is good, could be slightly better. Leg color, beak, eyes are good. As for color, you can see it in the wings. The small wing feathers won't tell you the final color, but they do tell you the base color

I was just thinking this a few minutes ago, your stock must have great strength as well to pass this on!

I hope so. Its the most important thing to me, this landrace was shaped by the land they roamed in, so it is my belief that they should still be able to roam that land to the same capacity they did

It sounds like "roamers" need to have strong leg muscles? I would think this is true. They look muscular in their stance. This would explain how a day old chick could hop up in that crate!

The three front ones with the rings are what I planted. The smaller solid yellows are the feral ones we've had for years on the property
It is so fascinating how these flowers developed the ability to follow the sun, they say it's for better pollination and attracting bees. Yours are just gorgeous! ❤
