LGBTQ+ Poultry Keepers

One of my pullets had a softshell egg break on its way out (I think). I made a thread about it, but here's the short version, and a question.

I saw what looked like poopy egg white on her bum, and she was in the classic "I don't feel good" pose. I brought her inside, washed her butt, and saw the soft shell sticking out of her vent. I got it all out, saw a bit of lash material, and dosed her with a calcium tablet. Then I started her on a 10 day course of Amoxicillin, which is over, and she seems to be fine, thought I've yet to see her lay another egg.

I treated this same bird for coccidiosis when she was about 5-6 weeks old.

Any connection?
If you see lash material, there is infection present somewhere in the oviduct. Its hard to say where in the duct the infection is though. But you did fabulous on the Amoxicillin, its the perfect drug for oviduct infections. If this infection is up high near the ovaries, it can lead to internal laying due to scarring, if its further on down the duct, it probably won't cause internal laying. The faster this gets cleared up, the healthier her duct and shell gland will stay. Internal laying makes them incredibly sick with E.coli infections, the bird would make this very clear with fever, anorexia, fluffed up, sleepiness, pale droopy comb. One of the first signs I have found is the area below the vent becomes swollen and red. Later the belly eventually fills with fluid from the body cavity infections leading to death of the bird.

I had seen a little lump hanging from one of my ducks, and worries that had happened to her. But then I saw Drake had it, and Doula did, and all my other girls in that group, so it must just be somwthing they have
Ducks are probably different in this respect, different anatomy. I have never kept Ducks. I should though! 😊

I really like them. I like chickens more, mostly because of their roosting and their general personality, but ducks seem to be easier on me to keep right noe

So, remember when I was wondering how big a serama fairy egg would be? Well, got to see that yesterday. The egg next to 10 and 20 cents, apologies for those seeing it twice

I chuckled when i found it. My birds are really putting the "production" into "egg production"🤣. I would've thought this is smaller than a quail egg, but I've never seen (in real life), held, or eaten a quail egg
I have a bunch of OEGB fairy eggs. Honestly, they are smaller than a quail egg. A regular egg from them is probably about the same as quail, imo.

Think they are closer to a lovebird or cockatiel egg (which I used to breed).
