@fluffycrow

I found this cactus growing out back, I have never seen one of these growing anywhere around here, so I was pretty excited to find it! It's a very healthy specimen! ❤️ It lays flat to the ground, very little height, and about 15 centimeters wide (6 inches). Can you identify it please? 😊

It’s GORGEOUS! I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more perfect wild specimen. They’re usually sun stressed to the point of no recognition. Maybe a few lithops, but still, WOW!

No, I love it! Maybe you can check on it again later during their flowering window--I'd love to see it if it ever blooms! They are very cool to look at. Almost like nature's mandalas. 🤩
I read on that link you included that they are springtime bloomers so I will definitely keep my eyes open next spring! 🌺🌺 And get photos! 📸

Isn't it a gorgeous specimen?! I can't wait to watch him live and grow. Hopefully nothing eats him! 😱 I should put a little fence around him. 🤔

It seems like you’ve got this much more than I do! My original guess was WAYYY off, echinocactus levels of off :p
No, no. I just took @TwoCrows' Mammillaria idea and went with it .

Yes, he needs a fence, and 1/2" hardware cloth, please. 😊😄

You both know your stuff, more than I do! :highfive:
I don't know, I just love all the things I learn when trying to ID (really anything) it's like solving a mystery (what is this mystery tool I have? This mystery chicken??? blah blah blah) I really would like to brush up on my taxonomy, like @fluffycrow though. Really lots of interesting connections to learn and make there.

It's pouring rain out right now. 😅 But first thing tomorrow morning, he's getting a hardware cloth cover for sure! 🥰
:woot

I hope you needed the rain! It's been sprinkling all day here, too. Really nice weather, though. Such a mellow day. Went from 48 to 12 sheep yesterday, so it's been a little quiet! 🐑 I hope you're enjoying yours!

The deeper I get into keeping succulents and cacti, the more I want to know too. At first I only cared for their common names, their street names if you will. 🤣 But now I want to know their scientific names. And of course it makes me want to keep every species out there. 🤣

We had a fairly decent monsoon season for a change, trees were dying left and right these past couple of years. This was a great summer! The rains are starting to wind down and I'm good with that, I want my arid 10% humidity back for fall. 🤣🍁🍂

How are the sheep doing? You have less sheep now? Have you been sheering this summer? 🐑 🐑

Yeah, it was kind of a crazy year and we got a little bit overstocked for this late in the season. It worked out, though, and we'll be going into this winter with our core group of sheep and be less stressed and won't have to throw all that hay at them and dealing with breeding groups and such (I have one set of related sheep atm, so that's a lot nicer to manage.)

I'm pretty much picking up the odd job here and there, but mastering my minimally employed skills for the next month or so until we get into more fall shearing. I'm pretty spoiled! :D

That's interesting that you have a monsoon season, I guess you are close enough to the gulf! We don't have too many established trees around us, it's mostly cleared out for pasture, but when we do plant them...😭 We are not great at keeping them watered enough until they are fully "weaned," I guess.

I hope you are having yourself a great Sunday! 😊

Sometimes less is more, especially with livestock. They can be eating machines and especially during the winter, less is easier to care for.

During the summer when the Pacific heats up at the equator, moisture accumulates in Central and South America and it pours up into Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. Hopefully anyway. Last couple of years the moisture never got dragged up, this year it's been fabulously pouring up with lots of rain. We need it! 🌧️ 🌧️
