We have a 1.5 week old chick. This morning we noticed it limping. It is in the coop with mom and the other large birds. Sadly it is the only one that hatched. When I pick it up I notice it can move it’s leg, but the toes don’t move. No other sign of illness. It hops around and seems happy but I wonder if I shouldn’t move it and mom to a place of their own. I have a dog crate for night and a small chicken tractor for day. Anything I can do to help this chick survive? We do have it on a. Medicated, starter grower. But it eats food from the Big birds as well. We put the chicken food in the chicken feeder, so the big birds are not as tempted to eat it. Rhode Island Red is the breed.

I did the best I could without hurting the chick and without mom getting angry. I have separated them from the flock. The chick has its own starter grow food in a chick feeder. Mom has her food in a higher feeder. Just plain water for now.

Mom can eat chick starter as well, it's fine. Besides she'll be trying to feed the chick whatever she eats.

I'd start giving the chick 1/4 tablet B-Complex daily. B Vitamins are very good for leg support.

I don't see anything really alarming in the photos. Can you feel the tendon, compare it to the "good leg" and see if it's in place? Usually if the tendon is slipped there's some swelling at the joint but not always.
