@WVduckchick
This is the chick at 7 weeks.

Adorable baby!! :love
I hate these in-between ones. I would say slow-developing male, but I'm still feeling female, and not seeing any pointy saddle feathers yet, and I'm pretty sure they are usually more obvious males at 7 weeks.
I have a 12-week old that I'm still on the fence about, but 2-week-olds that are already obvious! :barnie

Yes he/she is definitely keeping me guessing. Compared to photos of other seramas his age that I've found online, the comb is much smaller than most of the boys but darker red than most girls. I hope I will know for sure before 12 weeks!

They are so pretty! Is the black and white roo silkied? He's beautiful. I would say the the third one is female. I have a pekin bantam pullet whose comb was that red and already had little wattles by twelve weeks.

Yes that one is silkied...but strangely, about half of his wings are still smooth. I swore he was smooth until about 6 weeks, his feathers starting fluffing. So i assume his wings will fully fluff eventually. I have a separate pen of silkied serama also.
These are almost a month old. Momma teaching them to roost lol

And so it continues...

8 and a half weeks old and Custard the serama still has a very small, very red comb (doesn't always show in photos), and virtually no wattle growth.

The thing is, behaviourally, he has always seemed male to me. He and my older cockerel are always the ones making the alert noises when a bird flies overhead or a door slams etc, whilst the hens just look around for the danger. Plus last week I noticed Custard doing the 'come and get it!' routine that roosters and mother hens do when they find a tasty morsel, which I guess is him practising his big boy roo behaviour.

Except...why is his comb still so small? I've seen photos of male seramas with bigger combs and wattles at four to five weeks old. He seems very small in general. I know seramas are tiny but how tall/heavy should they be at eight weeks? I'm starting to worry Custard has stunted development or something!

I'm leaning female now. I don't see any pointy saddle feathers yet. And by 8 weeks, I would expect the comb to be much more prominent by now. Color doesn't seem to be as much determining factor in these little ones. You might try parting the feathers at the base of the tail and look for pointed saddle feathers coming in. By now, a boy should have some, I think.

The little black-tailed-buff in my post above, I am finally confident in saying female. :) Funny how some fool us for so long, and some are obvious so early.
