Lockdown starts today! Who's gonna hatch with me? UPDATE PICS!

Rustyswoman - I really want to say a big thank you. I worked till 1am and then again at 6am this morning getting my stuck chicks out. It does seem to have been a humidity issue.

I do have a question though. I have 2 with little protrusions on their belly's it looks like a bubble. What is this? Is there something I need to do.I also have 1 whose abdomen didn't completely close up. What should I do for it? Anything?

I have 13 happy, healthy chicks in the brooder and am happy with that but if there is something I can do I will. Extracting them was nerve wracking and it took a long time, but most of them are ok now. Had a couple with crooked toes but they are wearing boots and should be fine. Please let me know if anyone has some advice for my others.

Congrats to everyone on their hatches so far.

Little Noel (the one I had to help) is in the brooder driving them all crazy! lol I have a splash silkie and a blue maran out but still in the bator. A bunch of pips, but no one else seems to want to move for now! Lazy butts.

You are welcome sekinkead, I am very glad to be of help. 13! That makes me smile. It is nerve wracking isn't it. I have lost a few but usually are able to get them out ok.
Once in awhile they have issues and I think that has to do with incubation. Not that we did anything wrong, but we have to rely on mechanical mothers if we don't have a broody. And it is so hard to get everything right for 21 days.
Sometimes their navels are not fully closed or their yolk sacks fully absorbed. The best that you can do that I know of is to keep them warm, dry and safe from the siblings who might hurt them while they are healing.
My last chick looks a little imature. I think it had to do with it's position in the incubator and the fan blowing on it-cooling it off just a bit more than the other eggs. The yolk sack was mostly absorbed though.
It is amazing what a few hours or a day can do for the progress of the chicks.
Mine was just laying there on the floor. I could tell it need more help because it barely moved. I got the tap water running nice and warm and slow then gave the chick a nice long bath under the stream. I cleaned it up of all the leftover goo that was on it. Washed a bit of the yolk sac that would come off and gently towel dried it a little. Then back in the bator.
As I was washing it I could feel the strength coming back in it. It had been so "stuck" with goo and just couldn't move. If I had not washed it off it most likely wouldn't have made it.
It is up and moving around but not fully strong so it is going to be buddies with my other chick that I have no idea who pecked its head bloody. Little cannibals.
I can't put it back in with the others because the red spot is a big target for more pecking and the other chicks are harming it.
At first I thought it had an open skull but it is fine other than that.

I like to turn my chicks onto the other side if they can't do it themselves. About every hour or two. Then when they look a little stronger and fluffed sometimes I will nestle them in a cup with kleenex or paper towels so they can actually sit up. Make sure they have water now and then. Food isn't as important for a day. Then you just have to try them out and see how they do standing up. That belly button and yolk sac should dry up on their own.
Speckled Hen and her DH actually used superglue on one of their chicks who had some insides on the outside. They poked them back in gently and glue it up. Last I read it was doing great.
Good luck and keep up posted on how the little ones are doing.

I will get pics up today or tomorrow.

YAY!!!!

I just got home and I have 2 healthy chicks but I have to leave again and go the grandma #2's house. Do I just leave them in the incubator til then? I have two more that were to hatch today too but no pips, do you think they will hatch when should I check on them?

Thanks for the picture reminder Rustywoman. Congrats to you & your hatchings.

Here are my Bantam Blue Salmon Faverolles chicks that hatched Dec. 25th so far. Oops, looks like a Dominique egg was in the group afterall. There is still one more pipped & ready to hatch; but it's time for my nap. It's really hard work getting up & down since day 18 to check if all is ok. I'm exhausted I tell you & they did all the work of growing & hatching. I am so grateful for the "dry incubation" info on the BYC & thank you to all that supported, expecially Wheaties/Buddy Henry for advise. I learned so much in this incubation & followed the plan to the "T." The lower humidity, etc. sure made a difference this hatch & I was able to resist opening the incubator before all hatched; it all went so smooth & after a few other attempts this year that were not so smooth. Best wishes to all! Peace on Earth!

Well, out of 14 eggs, 12 hatched, one of which I had to help out...it had been almost 48 hours since he pipped, but then nothing...I heard him peeping the whole time, then less often, so I decided to bite the bullet and help him out. This took place yesterday, he was fully formed, but very tired, and I think too big for his shell so he couldn't turn around to zip open. He will take water from my fingernail, but hasn't used the waterer yet...I'm keeping a close eye on him, I'm still not sure if he'll make it! I candled the remaining 2 eggs today, both had expired, so it's time to disinfect the hatcher for the next batch of eggs, due to go into lockdown this coming Tuesday...Congrats to all, and Happy Holidays!

I woke up to 4 more!

2 EE's a blue maran and a mystery chick. Oh....these are from Taztaz and my best hatch rate so far!

BUT.....the other incubator with my new years duck and the 9 frizzles/silkies that I set last week was down to 73 degrees! Somehow the switch got tripped and turned itself off

I heard it running 2 hours before when I woke up so it couldn't have been off very long. This was supposed to be my last batch so

Well, I have lost 2 of the 6 that I had to help out.

2 others aren't getting around very well but will take water from my fingernail. I just keep going down every couple of hours and giving them water. They seem stronger everytime I check on them. I am just keeping my fingers crossed.

The rest of my hatch are doing great. Running around the brooder, eating, drinking, jumping and sleeping. It's so funny to watch them. They will all be running around and then they all stop, close their eyes, and flop down. Then they all jump up and start running around again. We have chairs around the brooder so the kids and I can sit and watch them. We haven't been getting much done since they hatched.
