We have started letting the girls free range during the day. It's now part of my 9 year olds chores to go open up their coop in the morning and check at night and make sure they are all "tucked in" before dark. We got home late tonight and it was already dark, so my husband went out to check....and lookee what he found!

Question now is....can we eat them or do we need to toss the first couple of eggs? The brown ones are nice size, but that white one seems a little small. Will they lay larger eggs as they older?

You bet you can eat them, yummy! You know what they say "size doesn't matter"
You have some beautiful looking eggs, congratulations.. now go and eat them up :)
When young hens start to lay their eggs are small and over time they will increase in size. My Easter Egger pullets just started laying about 3 weeks ago and their eggs are still on the small side but they will get bigger in time, right now there cute sized and the kids love the small green eggs.

Yay! You got your first eggs! They are called pullet eggs because the very first ones are always small. I think you can eat them, but MY chickens haven't even started laying yet so I'm probably not the best person to answer. Congrats!!!!!

Agreed, most definitely! Just because they are small, doesn't mean a thing! Enjoy!!!

New eggs are the best! When my girls started laying I'd find double yolkers in a normal sized egg. Really surprised me. Once things got sorted out they started laying single yolks, but it was neat getting double yolks!

Thanks for the replies ya'll ! Right now we find 1 brown and 1 white egg a day. The white ones are still kind of small, the brown one"s OMG the one we found today was HUGE! It barely fit in the egg carton we're using to store eggs. We think we'll have enough to fix omelettes for supper tomorrow! Hopefully the rest of the gang will start getting busy soon! My husband came in laughing at them last night, the white leghorn that is the contributor of the white eggs was nestled in one of the boxes and 4 of the reds were surrounding her, they started fussing at him almost like they were saying "Hey! Alittle privacy please!" lol I told him they were just being nosy trying to fugure out how she made that egg! lol
