Hey friends! PRAISE THE LORD, we have an external pip on our Cayuga duck egg!!! 😊😊 I’ve read over the sticky thread on the topic, but I couldn’t find (or maybe overlooked) a general timeframe between the external pip to when they start to zip... I did see on the thread that they pip and then they rest and continue to absorb all their “nutrients.” This is our first ever hatch! Thank you for any information ahead of time! Have a blessed day!!

Congrats! I usually give 36-48 hours. Though it can happen from one hour after pip to 72 hours. They have a very wide range.

In addition to this, I have another question. It (The sticky) said that they could be left in the incubator for a day or two, to allow them to fluff... do we need to give them food and water in the incubator? Or when do we need to start addressing that part? I wasn’t clear on the instructions immediately after the (Lord’s Willing!) hatch. 😊

Thank you so much!! We are so egg-cited!! My mom and I perched in watching position, and awww-ed over an egg for about 10 minutes earlier!! We are fascinated!!! That is a wide range!! Praying for the lesser side of the spectrum!! 😊

I find that chicks usually fluff up in a matter of hours. I usually remove them after they have dried. I'v never incubated duck eggs, but it seemed like they dried pretty fast under a broody, usually about an hour. Once they're dry you can take them to the brooder. I think the 1-2 day time line is for large hatches were some eggs may hatch a bit later than others. Usually because your supposed to be cautious about opening the bator, though I don't usually worry about it too much.
You can offer food and water as soon as they go into the brooder, though they may not be interested in it immediately because they have absorbed they're yolk sack. That will act as food for the first day or two.

Ohhh, okay!! So just give a little time to fluff and dry and then transfer, I got it! Thank you so much!! That makes sense about the different hatch times.
And that’s super interesting about the yolk being their “food” for a while!! This is a lot of learning, but so fun!!! 😊 Thank you again!
