ok, but how can we protect our flocks? is there something more ? iSo I spoke with my friend in the USDA and she said she can’t tell me everything that is going on. She has told me certain details that she said not to reveal.I don’t want her to lose her job. I hope you guys can understand.
so in september when i noticed my free ranging birds hanging out with the wild ones, and since we are "close" to norco where the disease is, i devised a plan for a larger closed run. then when i called the cdfa in feb they said NO more free ranging birds to ensure their safety. i followed the information to ensure my birds are ok. THE HENS ARE UNHAPPY and ask to go out everytime someone walks by the run. i just try to give lots of greens, pumpkin, fruit and insects. this is what i did, and now the disease is even closer. so i feel like i made a good choice. but everyone makes their own choice. good luck.So resources I've read say that you need to keep wild birds away from your flock. I can do that, but my flock would be confined. And likely miserable. I'm wondering if I should confine them. I certainly don't want them to be euthanized and I absolutely don't want to contribute to the spread of vND, but I also don't want to torture my chicken girls.
Just typing my thoughts, here. But I read about our friends in SoCal, and the proverbial writing on the wall is coming into focus for NorCal now that we're hearing about Redwood City, and Tracy, and Fremont....
Sorry, just saw that.I already linked the article this morning.![]()
She said the best thing you can do for the time being is to keep your birds confined in their run and don’t let any birds off your property and don’t get any new ones.ok, but how can we protect our flocks? is there something more?
No just calif. Is this happening in Alabama and Texas too? My cousin lives in Texas and has chickens so if so I will alert her.. SCARY!!
And UtahNo just calif.
Correct but there was just one bird/one case in Utah...there is not an outbreak of the disease there yet.And Utah
Oh alright.Correct but there was just one bird/one case in Utah...there is not an outbreak of the disease there yet.
There is no outbreak in Utah because that isolated case was contained and the affected bird was euthanized. This information is from my friend in the USDA.Correct but there was just one bird/one case in Utah...there is not an outbreak of the disease there yet.
