LOS ANGELES county CA under bird quarantine :(

Pics
Have been following the New Castles epidemic since last year and have had many thoughts, I really do think migratory birds can be vectors with all California being in the flight zone from Canada to Mexico in the Fall and back in the Spring. It has been stated that birds of the parrot family can carry this and unknown to many there are wild parrots that live and thrive in the San Francisco area and migrate South and return every year. I have a pecan tree which they stop at every year, make a lot of noise and eat a lot of nuts, then go. Fortunately, they have been and gone already this Spring. So far, everything has been well for me, I am located at the south end of the San Joaquin valley, also known as the Central Valley. My guess is that Mexico does nothing to monitor or contain this disease, so outbreaks there will inevitably spread to California due to traffic across the border (both human and poultry and migratory birds). I am thinking the best predictor of when it will be over might be to follow the history of the last outbreak in 2002. The last time I went to search the hatchery sites, all I went to had advisories that they were not selling/shipping any birds to the whole state of California. The local TSC has no baby chicks (though they did have some in February, I think). It seems like a bad year to have chickens, but I have been hit hard by some predators (an evil mutant fox/coyote thing) and I am going to incubate some eggs anyway, saved from my own birds. I am taking precautions, and keep separate shoes for home and going to town. This is creating a lot of stress in the lives of California chicken owners and hoping it will be over soon. Before it was over in 2002 it had spread to Arizona and I think maybe Texas.

County fairs for San Mateo (Redwood City) and San Joaquin (Tracy) have canceled poultry shows for this summer and indeed counties as far way as El Dorado and Humboldt are doing the same. But poultry shows/packets/auctions are still on for the Marin and Contra Costa fairs. Alameda has said it would allow 4h/ffa in-county but hasn't given out packets on its fair site.

It's discordant on the one hand, but on the other, I've been to lots of these events and DO NOT see "exhibition" (fighting) roosters in there or roosters period (other than those that are market ready meat pens). So I wonder how much good a fair ban (even uniformly applied) really does.

Some of our fellow chicken owners in Southern California seem to have ...taken notice.

OMG, that is a horrific incident if true! Heart goes out to those in the quarantine area if this is what is going on... Property invaded with a false warrant and all her healthy birds unprofessionally slaughtered in front of her children! I am wondering if they went to the wrong address and now are covering it up?

I don’t see the post you are referring to, but it sounds absolutely horrible!

Here's where she describes the equipment used to kill her chickens:

Here's where CDFA went out to kill her birds:

The state has never eradicated COMMERCIAL birds unless the flock was tested and verified, unlike what was documented here. And, commercial farmers are reimbursed for kills. Unlike what was documented here.

Thank you. I found the post. Very sad.
What pisses me off is that when speaking to those affiliated or in the poultry industry they all say that it’s so much better for the birds to be kept in the warehouses protected from the elements, predators, and disease. And that those of us who keep our poultry outside have unhealthy sick birds. It’s so disgusting how they think they are treating the chickens and turkeys humanely by keeping them in crowded warehouses.

The Facebook page is very disorganized but you’ll find some good snippets if you spend a lot of time going through it once then just read updates from there. Her post from yesterday about the vet who reported a suspected case of Newcastle and the CDFA vet told them they didn’t care about it is REALLY headscratching.
