LOS ANGELES county CA under bird quarantine :(

Hard to send very many if there are only three or four as is the limit in many places. And many people wouldn't think much of killing a pet with a cough.
Each state has at least one state lab...shipping a bird to the lab my cost a few bucks but it's worth it to know if you are dealing with something serious.

A responsible breeder with sacrifice a bird and a heartbeat.

Except they do. People are screaming, crying etc and trying to blow this up into the state is treating my babies horribly. Death isn't pretty and if they think workers have time to let them hold their chickens and lovingly stroke their feathers as they die, they're wrong. Many, instead of cooperating, are hiding birds and creating a spectacle.
I have to point out that it is hard to both hide birds AND create a spectacle, since the two are necessarily incompatible. All spectacles to date have been created courtesy of undertrained CDFA workers and those backyard poultry owners complying with CDFA protocols. To my knowledge, no one on the Save Our Birds site has tried to hide birds and all have complied with the CDFA/USDA edicts, no one has requested to "lovingly stroke feathers as they die", though some have requested to humanely destroy their birds themselves and have done so. Others have requested to have observers and support people present in order that their pets will not be stomped underfoot and then shot in the head. But thanks for coming in late with your opinion on this thread.

I'm far from uninformed. I won’t be taking part any longer.

Breanne, a little candor here, please.

The SOB people have most certainly created hysteria and, if you will, spectacle. Kerri What's-her-name is the poster girl for hysteria. Spectacle has been their purpose all along. And, in so doing, they've hampered the work of CDFA and the USDA to the best of their ability. Furthermore, at least in the case of Kerri Whoever-she-is, she's publicly and repeatedly advocated that people resist the CDFA/USDA and hide & move their birds and, in so doing, increase the potential for the spread of vND. She recorded herself doing it and took it to any media that would spread it.

I don't understand what the point of demonizing the official efforts when we are within shouting distance of containment because of the aggressiveness of their response. Seriously, for the life of me, I don't get it.

What has SOB done to eradicate or limit vND? I get that you're a supporter but I Can. Not. Get. Why.

I agree with everything said here.

Totally agree here. The greater good has to be considered. I feel bad for the responsible owners in the affected areas that do the right thing.

That's really unfortunate.

Actually what I said was quite different but apparently far more inflammatory than uninfomed and late to the party. I still plan to participate.

I'm glad to hear that, IgorsMistress!

As Breanne has said before, it will happen again. Those fighting birds get transported and cross state and national borders so there's little reason to think this is our last rodeo with vND. And next time it could be AZ, TX, NM or who knows where.

Someone's going to have to rely on what we've learned from our SoCal quarantine and response. I hope they'll be able to hit the ground running. And I hope that there will be more effective vaccines and more virus resistant chickens. ..but that's gonna take a decade if not longer. In any case, one lesson that I hope gets learned is that this is a time for community response and cooperation from both commercial operations and domestic chicken keepers. Hysteria, suspicion and finger pointing have precious little to offer.

One thing that's clear: some of us are very aware but the country isn't and I doubt even 90% of the people in the quarantine zones are. People in my quarantined county are still trying to rehome birds and buy eggs for hatching. I've probably told half a dozen teachers looking for eggs for their classroom on my neighborhood forum why they can't find them. And the people looking to rehome birds managed to even when they were informed that it was illegal with a stiff fine. So, YES, it will happen again and we'd better be ready and better prepared next time wherever it happens.

@IamRainey agreed! Someone already moved birds to AZ and there was a scare. I remember a case in UT as well. If people don't report it though...

Cock fighting is popular in some places here so I don't go to feed stores in those areas. I have shoes I wear outside the house that don't come inside and my shoes for our backyard stay out there. I quit going to certain feed stores because they let chickens roam the premises too.
Since I can't control others around me, I do my best to control what I can.
