Lost 5 of 31 CX from Meyer's Hatchery

Feel lucky with only losing 5 in the heat we all have been having. I order 10 from Ideal, 9 were DOA and the last died 2 days later. The only fault I can see with the hatchery is that maybe they should postpone shipping in this kind of heat but at the same time when the babies hatch they have to go. No I blame the postal service. They charge for shipping they allow live animals to come through their system they should be able to better accomidate them.

I agree, don't be quick to judge a hatchery based on one order. This is the worst time of year to ship birds, I always advise against it. If they consistently weren't doing a good job, they would be out of business. Feel lucky you only lost five! Next time shoot for a cooler month, like May or June. You can even order them now and get on the top of the list for next year, and guarantee them when you want them.

Texas is a long way away from Illinois (isn't it) You should try Meyers. Most people on this thread have not had any problems with them. And they are probably closer to you.
And as to having to wait till Sept. Meyers is in the heart of an Amish community and everyone around here is buying their meaties left and right. I waited 3 weeks for my last straight run. And it all goes well with my first batch I will be ordering more. (SHHH don't tell the BF) Meyers made it right by refunded your money. They are good people there very nice and helpful.

I usually just buy from my local feed store but this year I ordered from Whelp Hatchery. They were great! Excellent customer service and all of my chicks made it! Even with the heat we have had they are all doing great. With that being said and the rule of thumb, I better go and check on them and knock on wood! Good luck to you! I am sure there is a local person that is looking to lighten the load this time of year of look for a farm auction, they are out there!

I also bought my meaties from the local feed store. They were the same cost the same as the hatchery, but without the postage. I have to say that I liked the savings.

Thank you for the replies. Good point on the weather that could have caused severe dehydration during shipping. I've ordered this time of year over the past 3 or 4 years without a problem but will keep that in mind in the future.

BTW - I do buy my feed in advance and no 60-70lbs of feed is not a lot of extra for 4-5 CX that I raise over 8 wks.
