Lost 6 babies today. Feeling pretty heartbroken

Feeling pretty down today and can't help but feel a bit defeated.

I had 7 baby quail, 2 weeks old and thriving. At some point last night/early hours of the morning the bulb in my brooder lamp had blown...meaning they were exposed to cold temperatures for x amount of time (its getting pretty chilly at night here in the UK). When we woke up this morning, i found 4 dead, 2 breathing but laying on their sides not moving, and 1 (the most feathered) still upright but shivering and wobbly on its feet. The 3 remaining i put straight into my brinsea to warm them up whilst i drove out to buy new bulbs but when i got home the 2 pretty lifeless babies were gone and the 1 remaining ok one had perked up abit and was back to scurring around. She (i think) is now back in her brooder all alone with a new bulb in but cant help but fret that 1. this bulb will go again as the bulb that had blown before was 2 weeks in use, and so fear i lose my last and only quail. 2, shes now completely alone and dont know if that affects them at all. i dont want to put her in with the chicken chicks (who are also 2 weeks old) as fear they'll trample her).

Feel pretty sad and guilty like i could have done better as im new to quail. Ive ordered more eggs to start again but just so disappointed. They were my 1st quail and out of 16 set, only 7 hatched and to get this far to only lose them because of a bloody stupid equipment failure has really p*ssed on my chips. How long do they have to be exposed to a cold room for it to kill them? 😞

Hatching with the change of season can be difficult and things beyond your control can happen! I have had a few hatches that resulted in a loner. If possible, put its brooder inside (I have a small hamster cage for this purpose) and give it a small stuffed animal or mirror for company.

The brooder is inside anyway, i keep it in our dining room underneath the bigger one which i have 6 week old brahmas in, it just gets really chilly at night and were putting off keeping the heating on overnight. Unfortunately my last one decided to drown itself in the night. I kept pebbles in the water and this morning found it on top of the pebbles but its face in the water, only its head was wet. Is that normal? do they intentional kill themselves?

Ive got 24 eggs coming in the next few days to try again n now wondering what to do different 😒

Oh, I'm so sorry this happened to you. Is there any way you can get another chick or two to keep your last one company?
too late 😪 i woke up this morning to find shes stuck her head in the water dish and drowned herself. There were pebbles in there so she was lying on top of the pebbles with her face in the water...is that normal? do they intentionally do that? her body was still dry minus a wet wing which had contact with the pebbles.

I'm so sorry for you loss. Please don't give up. Next round will be better.
Thank you, and i hope so. My last one drowned herself last night, found her lying on top of the pebbles in the water dish this morning. Ive kept the same level of water and same amount of pebbles for the last 2 weeks with no issues and they couldnt submerge themselves. Somehow shed lay top of the pebbles and her body was still dry minus the wing on that side and her face was in a small gap between pebbles only to beak deep so felt she could have easily got out...not sure how to do better with the water for next time. i have 24 eggs coming in a couple of days and worrying now.

I don't know anything about raising or having quail. I just wanted to say I'm sorry about the loss of your babies.

It's understandable that you are worried about the next batch of eggs. But, as when I forgot to close a coop ONE night and lost all but one hen, you have learned a hard but valuable lesson about what CAN go wrong, not what WILL. Stock up on some extra brooder lamp bulbs, and best of luck with your next hatch!

oh no im so sorry, was it a predator? We have foxes constantly prowling our outside pen every night, just waiting for an opportunity. Thank you, that was my thinking tbh...im thinking of having 2 lamps on of a night (both together on the same side so the chicks can move to the other end to cool if they need to) that way if one goes in the night, the other is there as a back up so they stay warm until i attend to them in the morning. cant think what else i can do.
