Lost baby chicken

How old are these chicks?

I was going to encourage you to keep searching. Baby chicks tend to hide themselves extremely well, sort of like baby newborn deer do, when frightened by something. Once a BYCer reported a lost chick that had escaped the brooder, suspecting the dog had eaten it. They found the chick hours later tucked away cozily in a dirty close basket in a closet.

I had a similar occurrence. An eight-week old chick was missing after a hawk attack. I searched for it way beyond any hope of finding it. But I finally found it wedged between two bales of straw where it had hidden when the hawk dive bombed the free ranging flock.

Letting chicks under six weeks old out to free range, though, isn't advisable.
