I know what you mean - have a couple of them myself, lol! I actually had what I realize now was a "birchen Marans" roo several years ago & since there was no such thing as a birchen that I knew of back then, I culled him (he was also mean as a snake).

Good goobledy goo!  I got the 2013 Meyer hatchery catalog in the mail today - my first 3 chicks came from them 7 years ago & they still send me a catalog each year --- good grief!!! the prices!!! $18.00 straight run on blue copper marans -- for ONE chick -- and several other "rare" breeds, too, along w/a maximum order limit.  Do you think people will be lining up at the door at those prices?

Hey guys.  So I did attend the swap at O'Keefs a few weekends ago.  I ended up getting three 6 week old girls.  Well unfortunately the coronation died yesterday.  The day prior we had noticed that her nose was running.  24 hours later and she was a gonner.  The other two are doing great and they don't have any signs of being sick.  
Do you guys know where I could find some more girls around the same age?

Celie, thanks for the motivational words. You are our spokesperson for "Getting The Job Done". Your picture should be posted all over the world at the gate of everyone's chicken yard and farm. Kinda like every president's picture is posted in most federal buildings - Commander In Chief. You are our HERO!!!!

I'm trying to build up enough nerve to get it done. I think the only way that I could "do the deed" is unless the face is covered. I just can't see the face if I'm going to do that.

I will give it a try and let you know how it turns out.

I was talking to Jim last night about processing the extra roos.
So we go to bed & I dream that I hatches ALL ROOSTERS!!!!

I didn't actually have the gators come up & take the dead roos - I just slung them out into the bayou. We have several gators there & some big ol snapping turtles too.

I processed a young muscovy drake this weekend. He was under a year old. No, I didn't "do the deed" but I skinned the heck out of it. Here are my pics.

I started by pulling some of the down so that I could slice a break in the skin to begin skinning it.

This is it after it was skinned. Before skinning it, the weight was 9.32 lbs. After skinning, it weighed 6.02 lbs.

Here are pics of the skin. The last pic is the full skin without the meat, of course. It was a perfect shell. Good enough to take to the taxidermy. I really enjoy skinning. It takes me 45 minutes to an hour to do 1 because I like to take my time and do a good job. He will go in the freezer for a duck gumbo.

When I processed the one rooster that I did, I skinned it - I always skin ducks when hunters bring me surplus if they haven't already - it's so much easier than ducking & plucking!

We got some bad news last week. My hubby went for a routine chest xray and a spot was detected. While doing a biopsy on it, the technician deflated my husband's right lung.resulting in a 30 hour hospital stay, they got it reinflated. Now we got the results and it is lung cancer. the surgeon wants to remove the right upper lobe as soon as possible. this will be a major surgery! it is a good thing that i didn't order my black australorp chicks, since he will probably be in ICU for a little while and possibly a week's stay in the hospital. Our cats and dogs can pretty much fend for themselves while I am busy at the hospital. Hubby also has a tethered spinal cord causing his nerves to die and the muscles of his body to deteriorate. rough going here lately since he is between pain mgt. drs. and no GP will prescribe narcotics for him. he is in horrible pain and can barely manage. Due to his spinal condition he has lost the use of his legs and losing strength in his arms now too. please keep us in your prayers, they are greatly appreciated and needed. I'll try to keep everyone posted on his progress! thanks, Garilyn
