ls this typical?

I have a small flock consisting of 4 Australorps and 4 Red Stars. They are 12 1/2 weeks old now. I took this pic of one of my Red Stars on Wednesday (her 12 week birthday.) She has suddenly gotten a much redder comb and wattles over the last week, and when I pick her up, she flattens herself on the ground. From what I have read, this is a sign that they are getting ready to lay very soon, but it seems to me like she's still awfully young! Is this typical for the type of chicken she is? A couple of my Lorps are also getting much redder in the face and popping out some small wattles, but not as much as this girl. Right now I'm feeding Dumor's Grower/Finisher feed to everyone, along with grit and snacks...should I already go ahead and introduce oyster shell?

I think she's a bit young yet but some start at 16 weeks. I know mine started laying at 6 months but it depends on the breed. her body is probably preparing its self. does she squat when you pick her up? that's always a sign they are reaching sexual maturity. I'd look for that too she will probably start laying at about 16 weeks. who knows could be sooner! best wishes

Our hand raised chicks squat when we go to pick them up...I always took this as surrender. We don't have problems picking up our RIs, the Roo is a bit tough gotta get him from behind. The Americanas aren't easy to catch and do not squat we chase them down slowly toward the coop...so my opinion, such as it is, is surrender for you to pick them up safely..have you hand raised this group?

Yes, I raised my girls from 1 day old chicks, in a brooder in my kitchen. They are very much pets!
