Mahonri's 2nd Annual NYDHatch, watching them grow...

That would be great, I think I mentioned in Post #1 that it really is the honor system. That said, I'm gonna take a pic of the clock today at noon with pics of the eggs in my bators.

I slept thru the setting! DH did mine & didnt think about anything but have them set by noon.
Since my computer & the incubators are in separate rooms, I need to figure out how to take a pic of time & first hatched.

Your solution..................Brinsea Spot check thermometer. Best thing I ever bought for hatching. It's accurate to .01 degree. It has a probe, and you just stick it down through a vent hole and it hovers above the eggs.

Mahonri..........How's your spot check working out with the step by step instructions I gave you?

Thank you , checked it out , great idea for the future .
Since my " at top of egg " is taking its sweet time coming back up , I uped the 'stat just a smidge . I'm off to buy an indoor/outdoor thermometer [ and the chicken feed I forgot yesterday ] ; the i/o thermometer will not be too accurate , but I can get an idea of the temp at the roof vs that at egg level .

I set 29 Serma eggs that were shipped in 16 degree weather. I'll be happy if 1 hatches. 8 Polish from my Pullets ???. Never had one hatch yet. I'm hoping some will be fertile. The same for the 5 Silkie eggs I added. 12 Millie Fleur D'Uccles, and 4 Cochins that I'm testing for fertility.

I already had some eggs in this bator. I use another bator to hatch.

Mahonri I think 62 will hatch. The first 3 -- 2 Icelandic then 1 FBCM

It's not too late.....you can still order it........

You'd be surprised how much the regular thermometers are off by. I've had great hatches since I bought the spot check.

For the thermometers.. I've been using the cheap digital thermometer/hygrometers from Walmart. I've laid them right on top of the eggs in the turners and stayed at about 100 for the most part. They're about $6, I think.. anybody using them, are they okay? I've relied on those, because when I put the plain old thermometers that came with the bators in, they tend to be way different. I wonder if part of my problem to date is that the temps aren't nailed down where they should be.

I'm afraid to touch the thermostats. One in particular is fussy. A little bump and it goes temp-nuts

I tried for three days to get that stupid thing where it needs to be, and finally made it there this morning! I've been watching it since to make sure it STAYS there. Nudge one way and it's 83, nudge the other and it's 119...

I'm clocking in late, took a picture but that will have to wait...
I set 8 Barred Rock (shipped) eggs plus 10 Trader Joe's fertile eggs. I'm afraid to stack eggs, so the whole dozen.....wait, I just went back and stacked the other two TJ eggs, plus one of my own I gathered last night. What the heck, huh?

So, that's 21 eggs for me.

Mahonri will have 79 eggs hatch, and the first out will be Icelandic, some sort of Orpington, and a BLRW. (There are some of those, right?)

I need a drink.
