I'm right close to ya, buddy! 1953 model here. Lots of us baby boomers around here (well, not HERE on this thread)..... Ohhhhhh, now those were the days.....

'53 model here too.....us Kathy's have got to stick together! I dont know about you, but Im thrilled about getting older...it beats the alternative.

On another thread we learn that one of our members lost everything in the bator due to 10 hour loss of power because of a blizzard.

One thing all of us need to think about with the bators humming from Dec 11th to Jan 1st.-- what do we do if the power goes out!!??

I have a plug that I can use in my car but I'd have to turn the car on. For the short term... perhaps a couple of hours that would work.

For the long term many of you already have generators, many more of us should buy them.

Just thinking of contingency plans.... just in case.

I am definitely in. Not sure exactly what I will be hatching. Its a surprise. Joined the December egg swap which is set up for us to get our eggs by the 10th so they can rest a day. Well whatever I get I will be adding some egg laying mutt eggs of my own as well. Golden comet roo over golden comet, production red and amberlink hens. Some cute little chickies. To bad I can't sell the darn things at this time of year. The eggs are great to hatch though. I set some that were in the fridge for who knows how long and 3 out of 4 are in lockdown right now. I am hoping to get some money together and get some more bantam cochin eggs, sebrights or call ducks. It would be nice if my polish would lay or my cochin or my ee or my jersey giant but I don't hold out any hope for them. Stingy chickens.

Something you might want to check out in case of a power outage while your incubating--a power inverter. Figure out the amount of power your incubator uses (it should be listed on the label) and purchase a power inverter that will provide enough power. If you have an extra battery (truck battery, tractor battery, or a deep cycle battery), you connect the inverter to the battery and in converts DC power to AC and you plug the incubator into the inverter. Its cheaper than a generator.

Yeah they look pretty exotic.... and they lay beautiful blue eggs.

So glad you all and elieugene6 have joined us!!

OH! I want to do this! I just finished reading through the thread from last year (well, at least from the 29th!), and it sounds like fun

Nerve-wracking, but fun! Anyone have pictures of your New Year's babies from round one?

I'm ordering serama eggs, and I may throw in a few from the odd lot I have out back.. I'd love to hatch a couple good, friendly layers too, with pretty brown or colored eggs.. or some OEGB! We bought a little OEGB rooster that the whole family just adores! For God's sake, I don't think my cats are quite as lovable as he is! I swear it sounds like he's purring sometimes. I love looking at the pictures everyone posts of their birds... I want brahmas out back, and lakenvelders! And the vorwerk picture someone posted a few days ago was just to die for. I'd like to toss a few of those in the incubator too..

And I NEED a frizzled cochin somewhere in the mix. They look so fluffy and frazzled!

God only knows what the mutt offspring from my back yard will look like in a year or two. Frankenchicken!

I'll start looking for eggs!

Well, I won't quite make it to new years day, I should have christmas eve or christmas day babies! Bunch of silkies and maybe a few showgirls. After those hatch I have to back out of incubating for a while. If all goes well I will hatch out 50+

eggs in the next 30 days and then my BF will kill me when he realizes how many chicks are going to be in the brooder all winter! I want new years babies so bad...oh well maybe next year I will plan for it instead of chirstmas babies. I already have 7 silkie chicks in the brooder, 8 in the bator, at least 6 shipping tomorrow and then the rest first part of next week! What the heck was I thinking?!

That is what someone needs to do if I bid on or buy any more eggs!

I honestly think I'm going to forget about the whole new year's hatching thing. After a terrible loss like that,. . .

UNLESS I get eggs from my Buff Ameraucana or Polish girls. . . . Then I'll certainly risk it. It is worth it.
