Mahonri's 2nd Annual NYDHatch, watching them grow...

So true! I've been planning on getting an incubator and generator this Christmas. Well, I already got the Incubator - 1266 and 1267 Incubator and Hatcher- but I just know I will need a generator. The power has already almost killed my little hatch of button quail eggs. It went out twice on the same day but thankfully we had a small generator on standby.

Very important to think about back up energy! I would be devestated to lose any of my eggs.

Good luck everyone! I was planning on throwing some eggs in earlier than December 11th but maybe I will wait until then. Would be a nice hurrah into the New Year. Maybe I will have an Ameraucana egg by then. Come on ladies!

Just a hint for everyone. Tractor Supply will have a small, I think it is a 1000watt generator on sale for $149.99 on Friday only for those of you who may lose your electric and just need to run your bator and maybe some other small appliances.

Ya know .... last winter I had a Silkie setting. She got off the nest, and somehow the door of the nest area got closed (we used to close it at night), and she was off that nest for hours, maybe even all day. She still hatched out a few of them. I don't know how, but she did.

I honestly think I'm going to forget about the whole new year's hatching thing. After a terrible loss like that,. . .

UNLESS I get eggs from my Buff Ameraucana or Polish girls. . . . Then I'll certainly risk it. It is worth it.

What?! Oh Illia, I am so sorry. What eggs did you lose?

I am so sorry. The last hatch I attempted had eggs in it from my beloved EE Oprah who had died. The power went out for hours, temps were at 63 when I woke in the morning and nothing lived. I was so upset. It is a really sad thing to go through. I am so sorry. Get a generator and do a New Years hatch. I just know it will cheer you up. I hope your buffs lay you some eggs before then.

Good tip

$150 is reasonable especially if you aare dealing with costly eggs.

I am personally going to get a bigger one, looking at spending 300-450 on one on sale. We have a gas tank on the property and I feel comforted knowing we have something to keep the fridges, heater or bator going if power went out for an extended period of time.

Oh and to the comment about generators at TSC -
gig.gif
You realize most of us with terrible power outages have them because we live so far from civilization that the utility districts don't care, right? So that means, the nearest TSC I think is, umm, 4 hours away. . .

Not meaning to be rude, just, pointing out a sad but funny truth.

I guess I am a little luckier than that. Nearest TSC is 30 minutes, hate shopping at that one, prefer the one that is a hour away. They have covered Ohio with the stores everywhere. Heck, you can not drive an hour in any direction without seeing one practically! Kentucky is getting just as littered with them. I have some horrendous power outages as I live out in the middle of a nature preserve and the local electric co-op could care less about us till 5 or 6 days later. There is only 7 houses on my whole road for the electric company to worry about, so to them thay are not losing anything by letting us suffer a few days. I had to buy a generator several years ago as I learned the hard way about the electric out here.

In 2005, when I was hit with 4 hurricanes, I lost power....4 times....and it took me nearly a week each time to get it restored, since Im in the far reaches of the county which is the least populated. After that I decided I wasnt going to let hurricanes ruin my life, and I got a generator from Home Depot, so when one came thru again, at last I could run the fridge (and not lose food) and the a/c and a few lights.

Wouldnt you know, its still in the box, Ive never had to use it since. Murphys Law, I guess.

So true Halo! It seems like the more prepared you are, the less severe the weather! They were prediciting a "blizzard" for us last night and had all the graphics up "BLIZZARD of 2010" on the news. Yesterday morning DS and I went to the store to make sure that we had enough staples in the house to get us through the next couple of days just in case. We were watching the news last night and they showed people in the stores buying batteries and flashlights and it made me think of the fact that all we have in the house is small flashlights and scented candles. I got to worrying a bit but it was too late to go out since the storm had finally arrived. The wind was whipping the snow around and there were some white out conditions but when we go up this morning, the winds have died down and we might have gotten an inch of snow! OK I grew up in the northeast where it seemed like every storm that came through emptied out the grocery stores when people would go and stock up before the storm but I have to say that this was probably the most anticlimatic "blizzard" I have ever been through.

Don't get me wrong, I am very happy that we don't have to dig out of feet of snow (in fact I probably don't even have to shovel since the winds blew most of the new snow away) but really? Blizzard? We used to speculate that the weathermen worked for the grocery stores
