I would not put paper towel in there, especially if you put the eggs directly on top of it. When the eggs pip, the membrane may come into contact with the paper towel and it just wicks out the moisture/fluid from the egg. The membrane at that point dry out and harden up and the chicks can't get out due to shrink wrapping and die. I made that mistake once and would never do that again. It was painful to see the dead chick when you know it is your own fault.

I am officially in lockdown...... 20 eggs made it.
12 BCMarans
2 Icelandics
6 Cochins (that I thought were gonna be clear)

Luanne, the 3 eggs with Stormy's name were clear, so I pulled them. All the others appear to have growth.

I found the hole to put tubing into, so I can add water without opening! YAY!

I went into lockdown yesterday with these, which include 6 Icelandics, BCMarans, Delawares, Silkies, & Buckeyes:

40 more eggs (several Icelandics) into the bator today, for hatch Jan 18.

I had a dream last night that my eggs hatched but one of them only had a head and it was chirping at me the rest of it was water but it was still alive. The other one's came out as butterfly's and flew away. OMGoodness I’ll be glad when this is over.

goochgirl, I put my eggs in egg cartons for the last 3 days. It makes it easier for clean up and the chicks that hatch don't move the other eggs around that much.

Thank you for posting this... I had often wondered how I could keep my hatches from blending so I would know which babies where from what breeders.. This is a "Duh, why didn't I think of that, Moment".... but those cages are perfect!!

Well, ya know, I just could not figure out how to use those wire thingys .... They didn't work for me, so I just rigged this up. I could really have have cut them down even more, leaving even more room for airflow. Next time I probably will. I think this will work out though.

Good point on the paper towel Chickenfarmer.

I used to let my eggies hatch directly on the wire mesh. No problems.

But then saw a post about using the plastic (open weave) shelving liner. The post had pics and I realised I had a bunch of the stuff.

Now, when I take out the turner, I put in a piece of the shelving liner over the wire and then put in the eggs and go into lockdown. The liner sure helps to contain the egg shells for an easier cleanup after the hatch, and I believe its kinder to the little bittes' brand new tender feet.

After the hatch I take the liner outside, shake off the egg shell bit, rinse it off with the hose and then bring it in and throw it in the washing machine. Then it's ready for my next hatch.

I didn't like the wire thingys either. Did you incubate from day one in that egg carton?? I wanted to try it but was afraid the eggs would fall out while the turner tilted to much. I am using the egg carton for the last 3 days, but really wanted to use it for the whole time. So would love to know if you were brave enough to try it on the "tilt a whirl" egg turner days ????
