Corgi,
Do you shop at Gerens....my favorite place

Wolftracks.
I am sorry......and really do feel your pain.
I just had a bad situation that has me carrying so much guilt that I could not even talk about it.
But pretty sure I messed up......
Lesson to me..Do not have eggs due over Christmas.....I got to busy and missed some things.
My darn humidity dropped to 30.(don't have a clue why) when I was gone on Christmas eve............
Day 22.
I am litterally physically ill to think about it.
I did get 8 but know I lost some from not being available as I normally would be.
Anyway, thank You for talking about it .
Hard lessons this learning curve.

I know you did the best you could.......

OK these are 2 of my barred birds out of my EE and BR. I think one at least is a pullet, but around here that could change. LOL

If it is a pullet I was thinking of either breed her to my black AM or back to one of the barred roos and see if I get the same color. Maybe I'll even have eggs by the Easter hatch.

Here are my owls.

I just cleaned my Brinsea Eco 20 squeaky clean, and put 25 eggs in there (7 Am/OEs and 18 Marans) for lockdown. 25 eggs do NOT fit in the Eco 20. I had to double deck 4 of them. All I can do is hope I can sneak a few of the first hatched egg shells out of there quickly so they level out. Gotta remember for the future, 25 eggs is too many. Looks like 21 would fit just right.

wolftracks,

First off, so sorry about your chicks. It is frustrating to try and figure out what goes wrong the last 3 days. I have had the same problem in the past and you just don't know if it was a temp thing or a humidity thing. I wish I knew.

As for your "owl" chickens, I think top one looks more like a pullet than the bottom one. They are pretty with the brown coloring mixed in, they do look like wild bird colors.

Two others had bright green, blue and purple stripped wings. The biggest I just rehomed and I'm going to rehome the other too.

I love the colors of these birds and I'd like to have more. The other pullets I got from the same breeding were black with brown necks. I lost two very young and the other is a wack case. Think she's going. But I want more owls. If that is a pullet I hope I get green eggs. I have different egg color breeds, but they are all pure, so some cool looking EEs would be nice.

Will someone please confirm what I'm supposed to do to prepare for lockdown? Tonight, I candle my eggs and look for movement and/or veining, removing those eggs that don't have either. Tomorrow, I turn for the last time in the am, and lockdown at noon. I open holes in the incubator, put a wet towel in to increase humidity, and put the eggs on paper towels to reduce mess when they hatch (and soften the area for their feet. I can't stand the thought of them walking around on that wire as a welcome to the world.) I superglue my nose to the glass top and I don't open the incubator until they are all hatched. Is all of this correct??????

Pretty much.

During brief breaks away from the 'bator - yes, you do need to eat and go potty! - make sure you have all the supplies you need for chicks:
Brooder
Waterer
Feeder
Chick starter feed
Pine shavings
Heat lamp and at least one spare, and a way to secure that lamp

Those are the basics.
