Mahonri's 2nd Annual NYDHatch, watching them grow...

sooo... i asked my parents to see if they would mind me setting some eggs for a january first hatch and they said no because they think it's going to be too cold for the chicks even with a brooder... :'(

I am setting duck eggs and they take 28 days, that is why you see my posting about the 4th.

What kind of duck eggs are you setting? Is there anything special you have to do with duck eggs..like spritzing them with water or something? I am debating setting some and still hoping my duck will go broody on hers.

Aw, a New Years Day hatch would be so cool. I'm not sure I can hold out til the 11th since I already have eggs that have been sitting for awhile and need to go in ASAP. I was planning on having a Christmas hatch in the 'new' incubator. (new to me at least)

... although, I did buy an incubator hatcher pair so doesn't that mean I should test out the hatcher as well, with two separately timed hatches?!

Anyone in for a Christmas AND New Years hatch? lol.

Fawn & white runners. They take 28 days instead of 21 and they need higher humidity. If I can't keep the humidity up, then yes I spritz them. Otherwise I don't.

I will warn you - ducks STINK up the bator REALLY BAD, and then they are very messy when they are in a brooder - I use a brooder with a wood bottom I can take out twice a day to clean.

I'm in, will be setting Anocona, Ameraucana and Olive Eggers. Has anyone ever gotten eggs from Chicken Scratch Poultry? That is where I am getting my Ameraucana and Olive Eggers from.

Lostsoul,
I'm so very sorry for your loss - is that the rooster that is on your BYC page? He is (was) so beautiful. I would be totally distraught.
Hoping all of your unbroken eggs you got will hatch some gorgeous new babies to sooth the hurt.

I just got an ooollllldd QFC wooden incubator to use for a hatcher. It has incubator trays and one hatching tray, I'll be using all of them for hatching, unless I go backwards and use my sportsman for a hatcher, but I don't want to go there. It has a little crank on top you turn to turn your egg trays. I'll be setting it up ahead of time to check it out and make sure everything works.I was telling DH about the New Year's hatch and he just kind of rolled his eyes. Like I'm just now getting it down to a halfway reasonable number of chickens.

Jeeze, I am so sick of hearing how great this is and what a wonderful job Mahonri has done! Get a grip people, the unsung heroes are those of us who are shipping eggs to Mahonri! Think of the responsibility of that! I am in tactical mission preparation right now for next week's shipment of Icelandic eggs to Mahonri. I feel responsible for this man's sanity for crying out loud.

I had a meeting with Isi and his ladies. I explained that this mission must be successful in the interest of national security. Arizona has a lot going on right now and the last thing it needs is a crazy urban chicken farmer with an incubator full of duds!

So we upped Isi's Viagra to twice a day. It seems to be working.

I fed the flock apple pie laced with oyster shell calcium to make sure the eggs don't break during shipping. Now I am paranoid that the shells will be so hard the babies can't hatch!

I have practiced egg packaging over and over. I can do it in my sleep.

OMG did I cut enough air holes? Mayday, Mayday, start over!

Sadly, yesterday and today I staked out the post office. I need to know when the lady with the blue hair and lipstick on her earlobe goes on break. God, don't let me be next in line when she comes back. She's gonna' fumble the box, I just know it.

"Sir, please go ahead of me in line." " Mam, you look tired. Please, you go first." "Oops, I left my wallet in the car."

T minus six days and counting. Here is where we stand.

So when these things start hatching and you don't have to stay up all night online with a freaked out Mahonri, you'll have me to thank for it! Think about that.

I myself am starting to fear that I won't be able to carry out the duty of shipping Mahonri some eggs. . . I just got a Wheaten that laid today though!!!
