Hi Newlyweds

I'm in trouble...I really don't have any reason to be hatching at all right now...except the Orps, as they're in constant improvement mode.

I guess the Marans are, too...

And I'm still trying to perfect the banty Barred EE...

And the wind egg was just too cute not to hatch...

REALLY!! This disease doesn't need group hatching orgies like this!! We'll all end up divorced, hugging chickens in the street!!!

Mine are in, approx 1:00 pm eastern time. I have in:

15 ancona
3 olive eggers
5 blue copper maran
8 ameraucana
11 my own mutts

Temp holding at 100
Humidity holding approx 30%

How did you get that spot check to stick to the outside of your bator? Velcro?

Warden, I was just getting ready to stick my probe thermometer into my brinsea just like that.

Then I started wondering if those red band things that go around the top get hot??? Are those the heat things, and has your cord on your probe ever got melted or anything??? Just curious since I have never tried to do it this way and I saw your picture so thought I would ask.

Oh no! Fingers crossed, hope the polish egg comes out okay... I'll just hold off and not try it

Not a big farm.. mostly just stupidity and a little too much excitement! I quit paying attention to what/how many I had on order and just started buying eggs that are on the 'OOOO I saw those on BYC and I want a few of those' list.. or those that made it to the list suddenly when I saw them while looking for those that were already ON the list. And of course not much confidence yet in my hatching abilities, so far it hasn't been an overwhelming success.. I'm working on it

And then there were extras that I wasn't counting even when I did count... And I have a family member who told me a few weeks ago that he wants me to hatch some babies to restart his layer flock. He gave me creative license on the mix!! I personally feel that the plain white chickens with the plain white eggs he used to have were boring and he needs colorful birds with brown, blue and green eggs.

The only thing I CAN'T do with the extras is eat them. I mentioned getting cornish chicks and raising some for the table, and my other half looked at me like I'd grown horns and a tail..

He said he wouldn't tell me no, he's just shocked that I could even think of eating any of our animals. I also wanted to grow steak, that's not happening either.

Chances are really, really good any seramas we hatch out will be house birds... my husband has totally gone off the deep end with the little bitty chickens. We have three OEGB, and he wants to move those ones into the house.. Seriously, the little roo (his darling) slept in our bedroom one night, roosted on a towel on top of the dresser. He started crowing at 3:45 am. That said, I'm surprised the old man hasn't snapped out of the house chicken thing just yet..

Mahonri, since you are the instigator of this "Society of Excessive Hatching Enablers" can you organize a drive to recruit newbies to chicken farming to take some of the excess off our hands come Jan. 2nd?
