Mahonri's 2nd Annual NYDHatch, watching them grow...

That's a good thing... but won't I want to be hatching those and distributing eggs here in AZ for others to hatch?

At least when I put the Polish up for sale, I can say they are at point of lay! The roo with them just barely started crowing. He is hysterical to listen to, but I've never seen him get successful.

Yes, it would be good to get more Icelandics out there. But, this is where I am at with it .... I have eggs and chicks, and no one is speaking up for them. I am now gonna start eating the eggs, at least until some of these chicks are taken.

So what's so special about Icelandics?

You don't know? The are in danger of extinction. We must help preserve this breed!

You can read about them, here ....

Sorry, I figured they were a common "rare" breed considering the sheer number of them involved in this new years hatch.

I think that "Sheer number" is only two people.

ICELANDICS: oldest known land race of chickens since the jungles of Asia.

Also known as the Viking Hen (chickens). I'm just happy to have 13/24 that were viable at day 4. I won't candle them again until lockdown.

I'm candling my hovabator late tomorrow night... a day earlier than normal for me: let's see how many of the 41 stay in there.

Argh... The Steelers are messed UP!

I'd be putting in bids for Icelandics, myself, but I don't do specialized breeding; any chicks that hatched from eggs I let a broody handle would be mutts.

I haven't started hatching any of my own eggs yet but that's gonna start happening soon, 'cause now I have more laying pullets!

I do believe that there are four of us hatching Icelandics. Myself, Kathyinmo, The Warden and Happy Chooks.

Not many, but we talk about them all of the time!!
