Kathy, that first rooster and the front hen in your pics are colored like salmon faverolles. They sure are pretty. I might have to figure out how to get some of those.

Which brings me to my next question - what do you do when you have one that gets so picked on. One of the things that most surprised me is how mean my little lovelies can be. I have one hen who is always picked on. She just came out of her brooder house with a clutch of babies and can hardly take them around to feed them because the other hens beat her up so badly. While beating her up they ran over one of her chicks and seriously injured its leg. My husband is currently not working and so he does a great job of hovering and running out if he hears a ruckus but they really can do some damage in a short period of time.
We have currently seperated the low ranking hen (Cobijita) but my overall plans don't include seperate pens. I really want everyone free ranging together. So, what do we do? Get rid of the meanest hen, or get rid of the hen that is picked at?

I had never thought of a feather duster. I made a false mommy too. I made a basic pillowcase for the heating pad. And then to its surface I sewed strips of floppy flannel that hang down. I put the heating pad on low and the pillowcase has straps that I thread through holes I cut in the side of the cardboard brooder box so it is suspended above the chicks. They nestle into it like it were a mommy.

I am not about to let my chicks see these posts ....

they are just gonna have to be satisfied with my ghetto mama "warshrag!"

*snickering, hmmm, well at least I warmed it up in the microwave....*

Actually I really liked the warm washrag idea. I certainly hadn't thought of it and absolutely will be using it in the future. Sounds like it would be comforting to them.

You have a 3 year old? Oh my..... how do you find any time to get on the computer?

Been there, done that .... 5 times!
No thank you, I'm done .... whew, happy to be done, too! LOL

Grandkids are much more fun! Play and play, then send them home!

Long story, Kathy. PM me if you want the sordid details. He is not ours, but will be, hopefully soon.

Now that sounds intriguing! I am always looking for another - send him my way!

Yep, I was pretty sure you were going to say that. I have a four and a five year (two sons) and they keep things lively (that is the nicest way I know to put it). I love hearing about everyone's childrens antics - makes me feel like our kids are perfectly normal!
