Mahonri's 2nd Annual NYDHatch, watching them grow...

I went to work today and found out a miscalculation was made as to how many days off I really hade left for the year. So I clocked out........... FOR THE REST OF THE YEAR! Now I'll have plenty of time to keep my face press up against the door of the Incubator.

Question- When hatching several breeds, Once all your chicks hatch how do you tell what is what? Are you just that good at identifying breeds when they are chicks? Or do you mark them as they hatch?

The worst time I had was with blue and black Jersey Giants and blue and black Orpingtons. OMG, I had to wait months before I could tell them apart! It was awful. Never again will I do that. I band them at hatch now, if there are others in the same hatcher that would look similar. Other people use mesh or wire to keep the eggs apart BEFORE they hatch. Good luck!

OK today was depressing enough. Need a smilie wiping brow here!

I decided I'll candle after the pill here goes to bed. I get a mess cleaned up and leave the room and come back to another one, so I'm sitting for a while and hope she just drops somewhere.
I had too many kids! They all bought here stuff and this place looks like Toys R Us. Driving me nuts. I'll be happy when SSA and the VA decide they need to get thing together, so I know what I can do and move to a bigger (hopefully) house.

I had to pull 2 already and I can't see through most of them, so the ones that I can't see are going into lockdown on a chance.

And Denny the more I see of those PRs I hope I get a bunch so I can at least keep a trio. I like them

Sure would be nice to get some BCMs and Wellies.

Speaking of lows...

After my last candle today, I'm down to 42 eggs. (Having started with 82)

Good news for Halo... I had missed that I put some of her brown eggs in the Brinsea... so shipping those eggs all the way from Florida, I still have 9 blue and 3 brown eggs!
Her postal workers need a reward!

The other egg I had with wax on it quit, so both of those were quitters.
GOOD news is the very first pullet egg from my little EE is still going and the little chick was moving!!!
Also the little blue pullet egg that was laid fresh out of the hen that I put right into the warm incubator is still alive and kicking... I've named it "Lucky" and I wrote it in pencil right on top.

I'm still turning the eggs till morning, but I'm slowly upping the humidity.

I'm praying I get at least 25 chicks... so very grateful Laree is hatching some for me!

I love my post office. They are so good to me. They will even call me at 6 AM if I have something there.

My shipped eggs came from cpartist (Luanne). Get this .... 12 into lockdown! 3 were from the same hen (Stormy) and were not fertile. ALL the others made it this far.

Well, I shouldn't count my chicks before they hatch, I know. They are dark BCMarans eggs, and I THINK they are all growing, from what I can see with my mag lite.

By history, I have gone into lockdown early, late, or even as they pipped (most frequently I am a day late). I didn't really notice a difference. Honestly, I have totally forgotten lockdown before (a batch of Silkies is the first one I recall). I saw a pip and hurried and put them in a higher humidity. I had a great hatch, all fast and clean. I am sure it was just luck, and I do not recommend it.

I'm locking down in the morning. Gotta get my egg cartons ready.

I'll candle after the kids go to bed, but I'm pretty sure I'm going into lockdown with:

4 Welsummers
3 Olive eggers
3 Icelandics
5 Bantam cochins (I have 6 in there, but I think one quit - looked like a blood ring a few days ago)
