Mahonri's 2nd Annual NYDHatch, watching them grow...

Well, I have another Blue Mottled Banty Cochin and there are several more pips. I think I only had a dozen make it to 'confinement' after my technical failure, but about half were just not fertile. I have never had a failure rate like this, but at least I know it was my own dumb fault:

Everyone ready for a laugh? I think I can finally talk about it now, and I'm glad to have any hatch after this tragic error.

I candled and left the stupid dome off. I found it off still the next day.

This is what happens when you get all casual because you have 6 incubators going all the time. I got cocky.

Anyway, having 25% get to confinement is good, and I'm happy to have fuzzybutts.

After 24 hours of just being a tiny pip with no progress, I went to check the incubator and found this cute thing.

"Pullet in Training"

She's by golly going to egg those other pips on, no matter WHAT!

Baby is out of Cuckoo / Blue Marans, my first ever chicken egg hatch.

3 more pips in there now, come one babies! I must have cooked them a tad cooler than the loads of people that have chicks already, but that's ok. We're progressing now so I can breathe a sign of relief.

What I do......I candle on day 11 and remove any that are definately clear. The rest I leave til day 18, I candle again then and remove those that are not mostly dark. By that I mean those that were tiny on day 11 - if they have not grown I move them......either throw out or move to another bator to sit a few more days...When turning the eggs daily, if I smell a bad one, I remove it then. I am pretty sure I have a few early quitters - were no where near developed as they should be at either candling, but I will leave them in until Wednesday just to be sure

I have never seen movement. I just stick them to the flashlight and look at how dark they are

ETA: I do mark a question mark on them so I will know which ones I was unsure about.

I am glad some folks had success today.

I jsut got back from Tucson, where I drove to pick up 2 chickens which I didnt even get to keep! :lol

One chick hatched while I was gone, one of my eggs---two more of my eggs are 70% zipped. Nothing from Mahonri's eggies. What gives? They had better get a move on.

Well there is 4. I opened the rest. 2 late quitters and the rest were dead in the shell. The membrane was hard too. I will not attempt hatching ducks again without a humidity pump. It is just too hard to keep humidity high enough. At least I got 4.

Kind of down today. I know it is just my second try at this but I have 12 hatched out of 54 set. Pulled 12 at day 10 for infertility with another 4 questionable. But out of the remaining 38 I hatched 12? Less than 30%? Wow. To top it off I will probable have to euthinize one of the twelve because it can't stand. It flops over on its back and just kicks its feet till it is too exhausted to move. I keep flipping it back over but just can't keep upright. I have several more pips but no more noticable movement. How long do you wait til you give up on them and pull the plug? Help me out here folks.
