Mahonri's 2nd Annual NYDHatch, watching them grow...

I wanted to raise Emu and Ostiches years ago. Married Bill and that got changed.

If I can find a way to move out of here and find some cheap land I may go ahead and do it.

They can be free ranged right?

Drum Roll! I am finally announcing the winner of the Crowing Rooster Contest!

The totally subjective, I am the Boss of This, decision is that MuranoFarms entered the winning photo, and will receive the gently-used R-Com Mini incubator!

There was no prize for Runners Up - sorry - but Talia's entry would be second, with CorgiHouse third.
And an Honorable Mention, early entry but later changed by the submitting person, is RathBone's serving of formerly crowing silkie stew!

It would be kinda hard for me to butcher an Emu that I had leash trained, I think..... even for $29. a pound.

Wikipedia says an Emu is 40-106 lbs. I don't know....that's a lot of $ for 1 bird!

OK, you have changed my mind on that!

The monsters are accidents from eBay.. I ordered Black stars for someone local who wanted some. (I sell a lot to local urban farmers who just want egg layers)

What I got after many emails to the seller after the hatch produced not black stars.. was 1/2 Black jersey giants and 1/2 black star mutts. she was calling them black stars cuz the hens were black stars

So I got 12 black mutts that are huge dinosaur monster looking birds! I sold all but 3 (2 roos and 1 hen). Have to find homes for them too but one was scalped by a older hen and he's being nursed back... almost completely healed now... His name is roadkill and he is my buddy now.

I'll have to get photos of them soon but at 3 weeks they were about 1/2 a lb each! Hence the label monsters.
Now at almost 5 months the boys are showing some nice red and iridescent color leakage.

Debi I'm going to the poultry auction tomorrow. I'll ask around.

I so wish there was a poultry auction close by. I would be in so much trouble. Brings back so many memories of my dad taking me when I was a little girl.

Yes please...What do you do with an emu? There was one lost out here in the desert last spring.

Emu eggs are in high demand right now. You can raise them for their meat, which is said to be the leanest. Emu oil is also in demand. Not to mention how friendly emus are. They are like giant dogs and can even be leash trained.

I love emu steak.. taste great!
