Mahonri's 2nd Annual NYDHatch, watching them grow...

Ummm, it might. Get a cup of hot water (it will cool enough by the time you use it) and some Q-tips handy. I would ever-so-carefully start to chip away at the shell with tweezers around the pipped section to see what the membrane looks like.....

If the membrane is dry, dab warm water on it to soften it. Keep chipping super-small bits of shell away to check further. If the chick shows activity, put it back into the 'bator!

That's the start of the process... There's an "intervention" link around somewhere...

I have to say that it's your choice. I still think, having done it anyway, my fighter wouldn't have needed help if I'd been more patient. It was 10 hours after her pip that I stepped in. How long as it been for yours?

She pipped yesterday at 4:30, so 23 hours ago.

23 hours!!! I hate to be an enabler... But I would have to help a little and just see.

Generally if it's been more than 10 hours with no progress, after the beak has emerged, I will help. How long has it been since her beak was out of the shell?

I had absolutely NO IDEA what I was doing outside of the help from everyone on this thread, and I seemed to have succeeded (she's screaming at me from the brooder now to be picked up!), so I think you can do it if you are careful. Follow everyone's instructions....

As an afterthought. Chicks will often sit and wait after they have breached the shell to absorb the yolk fully. It can take as long as 10 hours to absorb the yolk. That's why i wait 10 hours. Even if there is a little blood while you are cracking the chick should be fine as long as the yolk sack has been absorbed fully. A bit of blood is normal if the membrane is still moist and hasn't dried out too much. Keep the cord attached to whatever half of the shell and set both the chick and eggshell back in the bator until dry.

WOW that is AWESOME!!!!!!!

just to clarify, she pipped 23 hours ago. Finally got her beak out of the shell about 1/2 hour ago. Membrane was white and thick. Part of it was stuck to her beak like glue; I released that. I put her back in with the membrane wet and clearish now. how would I know if she absorbed the yolk?
