To raise a turkey from hatching to fully grown, takes 2-3# feed for every 1# of weight gain. So assuming you process them as soon as they reach full size, for a 10# bird you will use 20-30# of feed. Heratage breeds will be at the upper end of that range, as they take longer to reach full adult size, where those bred for rapid growth will be more toward the 2# amount.

SO -

You raise 10 turkeys to 15# weight and process them

For each bird, you use 30-45# feed

So for 10, you will use 300-450# of feed total.

heritage birds will use more.

Phew caught up! I'm loving having a roo...although how long depends on how quiet he is. He seriously has changed so much the past 2 days. He sooo different...and I swear hes noticably bigger. I've never had a roo! WEll...these are my first chickens too. How old are they when they can fertilize eggs....not that my girls are laying..or if they are I haven't seen them.

I candled the eggs and the results are:
12 duck eggs from Zookeeper15133 all developing.
7 EE eggs from Zookeeper15133 plus 2 of my own still under my broody (hopefully all is good there as I do not want to bother her)
12 mixed LG breed from Noncentzter 1 clear 11 developing
21 eggs of my own 20 developing 1 clear
Not too bad, I think this is my best development rate to date.
I will candle at lock-down to cull quiters I hope my hatch rate is as

great as the developers are so far. If it is I might get some flack from my wife!

I keep wondering about this when I hear about 120 eggs being set. I am wondering what to do with the 13 Marans and 14 of 15 EO Basque eggs that will probably go into lockdown. I will also need to deal with what will probably be 5 of 6 Cream Legbar chicks.

Oh, not really a problem but a blessing?

Candled my eggs today. Only have 8 turkey eggs in for the hatch, so doesn't take long.

6 developing great, 2 I think still going but too dark to see.

AMEN! I, too, am an Atkins convert. I read the book years ago. I have believed in the program (haven't always followed it, but that is because of my weaknesses, not the program's) and used it to lose weight, even under the barrage of the anti-Atkins camp that will tout the dangers of a program they do not understand nor do they care to learn. I have laughed through the years when the news reports that Atkins is not as bad as was once thought (WHO thought? People who never read the book or the studies!) and then later when the reports claimed there could be some health benefits to a low carb diet. HA! YA THINK? We that "do Atkins" knew that all along. The bright side is, there are more and more experts that are backing off of their stand that it is harmful and I forsee a resurgance of followers of the program. Bottom line is, if you do it right, according to the way Dr. Atkins prescribed in the book, you will lose weight, and improve your general health without being hungry at all!

I did Atkins before I was a diabetic. I lost weight but also fell off . Now being diabetic and trying to find something that would help more than just taking pills. As one doctor said " oh, you can eat just about anything as long as you take you pills and kind of stay off sugar". They love to push pills on you. I started reading around the internet and found Dr. Berstiens site and book. I am now on that diet. Very little carbs. Like 35 or so a day. I eat mayo, butter, and cook with lard (biscuits). I have bacon and eggs every day for breakfast. I eat green veggies mostly. There are some exceptions. I also, can have blueberries, stawberries and rhubarb. I make bread from a lot of things other than flour. My doctor was amazed when I told her what I eat because all my tests where very good. All she said was keep up doing what you are doing. Even now the American diabetes ***. is cutting back on the carbs in their recomendations which was a big step for them. Kept saying you have to have your carbs. It is brain food..... hmmmmmmm. I think my brain works pretty good for my age. (74) Better than some.

I plan on stocking the freezer this fall. I am planning on making a plucker to assist me in this endeavor. I hope that this does not offend others But, I am hatching allot of chicks and will be free ranging them on my five acres. I an attempt to eat better quality chicken than those raised in chicken barns by mass producers.
