Maine

Thank you, Hoppy. I did see the cooper's coop auction, but was hoping to find a local source.

And chickmagnet, someone else asked if they were a cross too (maybe you saw that, on the auction thread). If he answered the question, it was by pm. I do not know enough about this breed to be able to tell by a photo if it looks like a cross or not.

I must be crazy, I just set call duck eggs.

probably in a month I'll be saying why did i do that??? hey, why not???
I set some ducks last year for New Years hatch. I was insane. I was bringing them from the basement to the second floor daily to the bathroom up there to destroy the tub while I cleaned their brooder, then back down to the brooder while I cleaned the tub. They were also pekins and grew insanely huge quickly. I eventually tossed them outside during the day and brought them in at night and then eventually gave up on that and just left the outside. I was really new to ducks and had no idea how hardy they were. Just a note to you: they're really hardy. Get them out of the house as soon as possible.

I can't show you what I made first. it was supposed to be a sheep but it turned into a weasel instead

You're really talented. And I really want to see this weasel.

Sorry, no goat knowledge here, but a long time ago SCG, you posted a link to a blog that talked about making individual pie servings in canning jars and freezing them. In season, I made 2 servings of strawberry rhubarb, 2 raspberry peach, 2 blueberry, and 4 apple. Then I vowed I would not consume them until 6 months from the date of making (figuring by then I'd be half-way to the date of eating the fresh ingredients again).

Well tonight, we ate the strawberry rhubarb that I made in late June. Man, was that good! I'm hoping this year I can get it together to make many more servings. I think we should be able to eat the raspberry peach next month. It would be nice to have weekly pie servings. I might need a bigger freezer....

I am so glad you tried them! And liked them! I freeze fruit all summer so I can make many things - these being one of them. My favorite is blackberries, blueberries and strawberries with cinnamon and a hint of almond extract.

You are making me want to go freezer digging for frozen fruit.

The consensus on backyardherds was to not breed now.

It takes 5 months to make a goat. Now people on the thread are saying to breed her. Sigh.

They should be 8 months/80 lbs to breed. She is 8 months-ish and about 71ish pounds. She didn't want to cooperate on the scale this morning so I got readings between 69 and 73 lbs. She was 65 lbs November 11th.

Your welcome coopchick, the 100 watt regular bulbs are getting really hard to find. I so dislike the curly bulbs and find that they are pretty useless for giving off any heat. I dont see any difference in the cost with regular 100 watt bulbs and small amount with 250 watt heat lamps maybe a coulpe dollars,if that. but well worth it. cost on the electric bill goes up here in the cold weather anyways. My guinea is doing good. if you come across 100 watt regular bulbs if you can find them grab em, I was told by some of the hardware stores what they had of that kind was it and wouldn't be getting anymore and couple of places had none at all.

Paulajon, Glad to hear your guinea is doing good. I found 100 watters at the Dollar Store. I even found a Red 85 watt flood light at a local hardware store.
darn quote is not working right
so to reply to coopchick719
I set up a heat lamp in my coop 2 feet from the where the chickens would want to get under it (safely). then see how they are, if they are spread out, it's too warm or if they are huddled right under it, move it just a bit closer but be careful because it can start a fire. I find 2feet is plenty close enough and sometimes mine is set up for the perching birds- 2' above the perch not the floor. if you have floor dwellers, then 2' from the highest bedding, remember, they toss the hay all over and you don't want it to be closer due to fire.

Thanks Hoppy! I've changed out the twirly bulbs and hiding them from DH.

Heat lamp is mounted securely and on a timer. Shih tzu is so cute! Love the fluffy silkie babies too!!

I made this last night. it's needle felting from alpaca wool. (it's a shih tzu dog in case you can't tell)

I don't see a problem with waiting until she's a bit bigger/older. it might be they typically like to have babies at a certain time of the yr. we always bred the sheep to lamb in jan because they would be bigger for easter and show season. others that don't want to deal with lambs in the winter, wait a few months then they are born on spring pastures.
