put them in and cover them with milk jugs if they will fit. that's what Im going to do but not today, just way too tired.

Mine are a bit beyond jugs. They're growing out of my cold frame which is 3 feet down to 2 feet. Granted, they're in tall pots, but I start them early. I'm determined to have July tomatoes.

I do have some of those wall o water things, I used them last year and didn't note a huge difference when using them.

I now have everything planted except for the corn, sunflowers, cucumbers, pumpkin and celery. No room in the main garden and the alternate garden is still covered by the old horse shelter. Also need to replant most of the herbs I had started indoors. Figure I will just use pots on the deck for those,

Did some work on the horse fence. Got one strand of tape up on the 100' side. Fairly easy to do but I need a new pair of cutters to cut the tape. My current wire snippers are a bit on the dull side and couldn't cut through cotton candy. And I also need nails and/or wood screws to finish the project. I'd go today to pick up the supplies but since it is a holiday I generally don't go out shopping unless it is an emergency. I hate encouraging businesses to be open on days they should be closed. So the old shelter can't come down until the new fence goes in front of it.

The birds are enjoying another day of freedom. Many dust baths have happened. Now they are rooting around where I just mowed looking for snacks. All that is left is to dig out the weed whacker and trim around the rose bushes in front of the house. But for now I am going to relax inside and enjoy the rest of my day off.

I planted my bucket tomatoes and peppers. Still need to do the actual inground garden (dirt is way too cold and way too muddy right now) and plant all the cukes, squash, pumpkins, canteloupe, watermelon, etc.


I was able to plant them really deep (they're really leggy this year from spending far too long in the cold frame) so hopefully they'll take off soon.

I've got pumpkins, peas, carrots and sunflowers in the ground as well as 1 pepper plant that my son gave me for mother's day. I have melons sitting on the porch and being brought inside at night. I'm hoping to put them in soon.

On a chicken-related note, the coop is coming along beautifully and I just scored some free fencing. As soon as the paint dries, I'll add the legs to get it off the ground and then it will almost be complete. Chickies coming home Sunday hopefully.

I've got duck problems here. I have 2 boys, 1 girl and a young duckling with a chicken for a momma. Well the girl duck decided to go broody yesterday, and she's in the duckhouse in a gigantic nest with just the top of her head sticking out so she can give the massive stink eye. She looks like an alligator. Anyway, the boys are having a tough time of it now that there's no one to ... uh... tango with. Now they're trying to tango with my banty hen and the baby duck. I've had to put them back into a brooder to protect them from the boys. Any ideas (besides getting more girls or offing the boys)? BF thinks we should get the boys a decoy duck and see if they enjoy that. I think they're too smart for that.

My tomatoes are extremely leggy this year, but they'll have to wait a little longer to go in the ground. I did have a small amount of frost damage on 2 of the eggplant, and 2 of the peppers. Tonight, I covered them with floating row covers and put a double layer over the eggplant. After tonight, it looks like temperatures will moderate, so maybe I can plant a few tomatoes each day after school.

Today's project involved setting up 200 more feet of deer fence. I had been letting the older girls free-range, since they are far from the garden, but they inched closer and closer and yesterday we had to chase them off. So now they have a large sectioned off area by the woods. I have one roll left, and that will be used to section off an area for the bachelors who will inhabit the jail. Our intent was to have the jail be mobile, but since that didn't work out so well, they will have their own fenced-in roaming area.

Not sure how I will get the corn and the rest of the garden in next weekend. That hoop house is full of weeds and blooming poppies that we feel bad pulling up. And I really need to section off part of the hoop coop so I can pull all the girls out of the jail. And my school budget need to be done, and 150 volcanoes need to be dipped in melted wax. This is a crazy time of year.

It has been my experience that the drakes will kill the banty and the duckling will probably get stomped. I would either put one pair or the other in confinement, or off the drakes.

Ditto. We lost three chicks here this week that were under a momma broody because the drake was not getting enough. He dragged momma off the nest and chased her around so that she hid and the babies died overnight. She has a bald, bruised head now. Needless to say he is going to a new home with lots of other gals. So, the duckling is alive. If it makes it overnight I am going to say I saved it.

yey me. My son is thrilled. He cried to find the chicks dead. And it looks like Anconas are on the way. Now if only I had a nice Muscovie who wanted to set them. I have to risk the incubator again.
