Looking for some chicks...anyone know of who might have some available? ??
Not sure if there will be any for sale, but the Topsham fair and Skowhegan fair both begin this week. If you're near either area might be worth looking into? I don't know either--but I need to find myself some birds asap. Not looking for chicks though...I need at least semi-grown hens!

I did on a few of the swap pages. My daughter is willing to get older ones because we are ready now and she wasn't interested in the chicks we found in craigslist. She has done her research and knows what she wants :)

Where are you located. I am getting 2 birds that are supposedly ameraucanas (though I suspect their EEs). He has 4. They are free because they are older birds but still laying. He's making room for new chicks. If you are in my area I'd be happy to grab all 4 and you can have two of them.

Here's a random question in reference to coop supplies:

Anyone have crafty ideas or suggestions on replacements for pine shavings? I figure grass clippings in the run is fine, but I'm looking for something for the coop (which is actually a section of my barn). Ideas?

For those of you who use shavings--where do you get them, and what's your average price? I've been picking them up at various farm supply stores between Augusta-Yarmouth and been paying around $5 per bail (~3cu.ft.). My cousin swears he's seen them for half the price, but I'm not sure if they were half the volume. Suggestions welcome!

Thanks,
Jazor

If you shop at Aubuchon it's about 6 bucks for 3.25 ft3, but you do get a discount for shopping there, with a card. I get about 5$ back every month or so. They are very friendly there, very helpful and sell a lot of livestock items for a hardware store.

Widget, how are your bees doing this year? There's lots of reports of starving hives from KLCB, my hive included.

Why are the bees starving? Disease? Don't you just feed them sugar water?

I just use TSC wood shavings in my coop, but my dream would be to find a source of coffee chaff! I love the smell of coffee.
