Maine

We have enough of those about ten hours south of us. Do not need any here. No insult to actual monkeys intended.

Thank you both SCG & Hoppy!

I'm very confused on the wormers. I've read: wazine should be used for first time wormings preventing worm overload which could be toxic and kill the chicken. and then in the same thread: it isn't necessary to use wazine first since valbazen kills gently over several days.

Advice from someone who has experience with wormers?? I don't want to overload her system either way.

It took me a minute to figure out how far south I could drive in 10 hours... if I didn't get lost. Agreed!!! Don't get me going on that topic. I may never stop! I got my mulch hay yesterday; 20 bales. I layed out a 3 sided cold frame with south side opened. An 8' section of cattle panel will fit over the top nicely, and as I had extra bales left, decided to add on to the cold frame and make it a duplex. One side planted to veggies for the kitchen, and I'll plant some grains and old seed in the other one for the girls winter enjoyment. I started drying seeds from my best 3 cucumbers. The girls are harvesting the seeds from the rest of the cukes. Does any one out there enjoy Suyo Long cucumbers? They are OP, and IMO one of the best cucumbers that can be grown. Never bitter. Can also double as a pickler.

Piperazine and wazine are the same chemical. Its gentle, mild, so they recommend it for first timers but I don't bother with any of that chemical mystery. Get yourself the Ivermectin and stop wondering. It does on the skin directly. It works quickly and is out of their system quickly. I sent you a pm with details on finding it. Everyone is a vet in here but if you just do what you can that's more than nothing and nothing will certainly kill them. That makes it easier to act in my mind. Hope it helps you.

I hope some of you will show up at the Bird Show. There are enough entries that we are in two buildings this year. Come see the different breeds and come see the difference between hatchery and 'heritage.' Its amazing to see the different birds you never knew were out there and folks are nice. Hoppy mentioned it was free so.... come support us kids and kids at heart with birds all clean and perdy!

If she's really sick I'd do Wazine first, especially considering she likely has a high load that you're seeing the worms shed in the poo. That's just my opinion, I'm not a vet, I don't play one on TV.

You must have read that in the thread I posted, because it sounds familiar. I believe it is true that Valbazen kills gently over several days, but I only think that from what I've read on here. Dawg seems like he knows what he is talking about, so I usually trust his opinion.

I plan to treat mine with Valbazen and follow up with Ivermectin. You will want to treat the mites too, and the Ivermectin is good for that. If you are really worried about toxic worm overload, you could always start with Wazine. There are other mite treatments too. Some people use Sevin dust, and I've read about people using Adams flea and tick dip, although that seems like a messy job!

Really, you just need to figure out what you are comfortable with and go with that.

My oldest son and I are planning on checking out the show. We're looking forward to it!

I am really getting into my chickens. A good friend of mine referred me to this site. Looking forward to learning how to best take care of my chickens esp. this coming winter. I am a first time chicken owner, so I got some learning to do..
