Maine

I am really getting into my chickens.  A good friend of mine referred me to this site.  Looking forward to learning how to best take care of my chickens esp. this coming winter.  I am a first time chicken owner, so I got some learning to do..

Always nice to see new people joining in. We are a friendly bunch and happy to share what we have learned. Do not be afraid to ask questions. We all were first time owners at one point. And even if it is not chicken related the people here are pretty knowledgeable about most every topic.

So what do you have for birds? What part of Maine do you hail from?

Went to the store today and picked up some ingredients to make homemade minestrone soup.

Had my list and managed to get everything on it. Of course once I got to the checkout I realized I had forgot to grab the vodka for the homemade vanilla. I had not put it on my list.

I did not feel like getting out of line since the store was busy so I checked out and then went to another store. Got the vodka and a few other items that I did not really need but since I was there I grabbed it anyway.

Arrived home and made the soup. Brought all the veggie scraps out to the birds who proceeded to have a knock down drag out scuffle as to who ended up with the best bits. The soup turned out great but I have to say making a batch of onion soup is so much easier. Less veggies to chop up. I also made some cinnamon honey wheat bread to go with the soup. Yum.

Have to say I love my bread maker that I bought way back in 2002. Made by Westbend and called Just for Dinner it makes a small loaf great for two people. Just add the ingredients, push start and 45 minutes later fresh bread.

Widget, I make 2 loaves of bread a week and I have to say that your 45 minutes of breadmaking sounds like a dream.

BF went to work today, I butchered roos. We are now 10 roos lighter. Just finished cleaning up and he should be home any minute, to find 10 carcasses that he'll have to cut up and put into bags because I am bushed.

Unfortunately my roos had mites. I had treated the tractor with 2 weekly doses of ivermectin (today was the 3rd week when they'd be due again) and one of them was still totally encrusted with mites. The others had a small infestation. That makes me think I shouldn't use ivermectin on the main coop biddies (the roos I pulled out of there also had some mites). I really, really, appreciate my neighbor getting "free range" birds and not delousing them. I even gave her the wormer and ivermectin and she just never did it. My flock was fine until her birds started coming over and now I have mites. Coincidence? Not sure.

I've been reading up on herbs for my flock. I saw on one site to make an herb tea. They can have it watm in the winter so stay hydrated, benefits of herbs, and something warm for then too. Does anyone else do this?

Back from putting the birds up at show. I have to say that I am a little embarrassed. [here I stand and nervously look about...] "Hi, My name is Laurie and I love my geese. I named them and admire them and even worry over them. I even talk to them and hated leaving them there overnight." Its supposed to a really good show with some birds from out of state and some very rare birds. I hope to see you there!
