I had a person I knew that was going to order 100 pullet chicks, grow them up and then sell them as POL....after a few months of raising her birds and realizing how much work her 25 chicks were, how much time to feed, water and clean....wasn't worth what people wanted to pay for them. I guess the going rate is $15 here??

whats everyons thoughts about the black australorps im thinking about trying to hatch out a batch for my own flock i can get the fertlized eggs for 2 bucks a dozen im just wanting to build up my flock some and try out hatching some eggs sence ive only got some jersey giant pullets and 3 other pullets we arent sure of yet what they are as they are only a month old im not looking to have more than 25 or 30 birds to keep any thing over that will be going to freezer camp or to other homes

I just caught up on the last couple pages and was surprised!!! I also have a barred rock hen who gets in my van. I actually shut her in yesterday because she hopped in and scooted to the back while I had my back turned. She is after the cracker bits that my toddler drops I assume.

I did a little coop upgrading yesterday. Decided to spend a little time on ventilation, I was almost sure I had enough ventilation till we got this 85 degree weather. I read on here someplace there really isn't such a thing as too much ventilation in a coop. I bit the bullet and took out my permanently mounted non opening windows (that I built myself). I nailed welded wire hardware cloth on the outside of the window openings, ripped some pine boards into 1" X 2" for molding around the window openings, I raised the table saw blade to rip 1/2" deep into the molding and made a couple passes to have a channel so the trim would sit flush after it was placed over the hardware cloth (did this to hide the nails and help hold the wire cloth). After the trim was screwed on I had to go inside and zip the screw points off as they came through a little. I reinforced the windows with corner brackets and put some hinges on and hung the windows back up. Now we have critter proof opening windows. And it was a lot cooler in there today than it was yesterday.
