Maine

you would be better to keep them in the same cage especially in the winter, they will help keep each other warm by snuggling together. if you have them in a rabbit coop, you will want to put plastic to block the wind from below (not under the cage but around the legs of the cage. drafts will kill chickens the fastest.
thanks for the info very helpful. Im not sure if we are going to start soon I have to find out what the laws on living in town and if we have space in our yard. Also I dont have any coop but know someone selling a rabbit cage that to me looks like a coop already it has two cages stacked and is about 3 or 4 feet by 2 feet and each cage is about 2 feet tall. I was thinking about just keeping two chickens one in each cage, maybe get a couple chicks and raise them inside first. I was thinking about golden sex link for a breed, from what I read in the breed secion here they seem to be the best for both cold weather and egg laying.

I can't believe I am about to do this. set another set of sizzle eggs. had several people wanting them and I have eggs, can't let them go to waste. now debating if i want those turkey eggs that were at the swap???(I really shouldn't- that would only be an extra week but that would be another 12 if they all hatch plus what I already have going) hmmmm.

I can't wait to hear what you get too. and remember if it hatches white, it's probably NOT just white.

No worries

would you like the description of the brunswick swap- dismal is what I heard, one vendor. on the other hand, augusta was busy dispite the wind. several people that I expected to show up never did and there were a few new people, one person drove 1 1/2 hours to be there. we started getting calls from people that went to the brunswick swap to see if it was worth the drive to augusta, it was. there were baby goats, bunnies, chickens of course and one turkey went for a strut in the parking lot. he was quite handsome to watch and never ran off.
guinea hens are in short supply, several people looking but no one had any.
SOOOOOOOO, how was the swap????

Be really descriptive for those of us that couldnt be there

Hi All!
My husband and I just got a house complete with brand new coop big enough for about 10 / 12 chickens. We are brand new to this so we are looking for some newly laying pullets (or some that are just about ready to lay) to start our first flock! We are interested in whatever varieties are good layers with a few easter eggers mixed in for fun. My question is; Where can I get started pullets in Maine? We are willing to travel about an hour and a bit from the Portland area to get them. We would also prefer pullets that have been more or less hand raised to make it easier on us for our first time out. I have checked Craigslist and Uncle Henry's without too much luck thus far...

We are looking for about 6 birds to get us started.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

I think you should take in one of the many poultry swaps going on around the state. if you click the link in my siggy, it will take you to the maine chicken swaps and show thread and the first page has a list of all upcoming swaps. sanford is probably going to be the closest and I think that starts may 5th.
