Just finished putting a second tarp on the ducks' pen to provide more shade for tomorrow. Hopefully they will be somewhat cooler. I also filled up a couple buckets of water so all I have to do is change them out before I go to work. Thank goodness I have a very flexible work schedule so I can go in as early as 5am and get out around 130pm before the heat gets too intolerable. Now all I have left is to put the air conditioner in the bedroom window so I can get some sleep tomorrow night. That is if it gets as hot as they predict.

Best news of the day was my new computer arrived.

. After six years and three years of major battery issues (thanks to my dogs) plus almost a year of no longer being able to upgrade I made the plunge and bought a new MacBook Pro. Now I have the fun of transferring files and anything else I need from my old MacBook. Of course one of the first things I did was make sure my important websites were saved and ready to access at the click of a button.

Ok, I suppose it's a little late to ask this since we already HAVE birds, but... I attempted looking on our town's website and couldn't find a thing. Does anyone know if there are any limits/regulations regarding keeping birds in Standish?

And wow, reading the replies I missed while I was MIA...

We picked up birds from EA earlier this month as well. 5 EEs and 2 Orpingtons. All the EEs had bald backs from plucking each other, and 6 of the 7 were dealing with respiratory issues. As soon as they found out they gave us sick birds, they refused to return our calls. They were also so incredibly antisocial it was absurd. Needless to say, we'll never be going there again! Two of the EEs were for my mother, she wound up keeping all 7 and treating them with Duramycin. This may sound heartless, but if they'd been more social I'd have been ok treating them, but dealing with sick AND antisocial birds, while trying to keep from getting my current birds sick... Not something I wanted to do as a beginner! I wasn't expecting friendly birds, but these poor things were terrified out of their beaks.

My 4 chicks are still inside, and they're 8 or 9 weeks old! Something like that. lol I am SOOO ready for them to go outside! I should never have let DH fix the shed! The door he made is crooked, totally drafty, and not secure at all! Thankfully my step father is building new doors for me, I'm crossing my fingers the birds will be outside by the end of the weekend! I had started out with 6 chicks, two went to live with my mother. I love how social these guys are being hand raised, but man, the MESS! I don't know if I'd want to do chicks again in this house! Then my light Brahma hen, who is now laying!, is still at my mother's as well. I can't wait to get her him. Crossing my fingers introductions will go smoothly!

Then I'll be getting some Buff Orpingtons and EEs probably in July sometime. Not from EA this time though! I just hope I don't wind up with a bunch of roos!

We don't have an AC here, so tomorrow we'll be hanging out at the beach! Can't wait! It's been at least 2-3 years since I've been to the ocean. We usually go to the lake instead.

the nice thing about getting a new computer these days is the auto transfer cord. I dreaded doing it myself and I always used to pay the computer store to do it but I got so screwed on my last computer being a total lemon that I won't go back. it was so easy that I now kick myself for ovre spending for all those years just because i didn't know. I have a dell but prior it was custom built.

I have a freind in standish with chickens so should not be an issue unless you live in city limits, then it might be different or maybe she's an outlaw too. lol.

I recommend that you ask the town zoning officer what 'zone' you are in. That would help, although Standish is mostly residential or ag. I think, if you don't want to draw too much attention you could try the town website for zoning laws that might cover numbers and after that just ask if they publish the laws in a book so you are doing the work yourself and no one need be wiser if you have to keep a few extras.

I'm pretty sure chickens are fine, neighbors across the street have them, people all over here have them. Heck, my next door neighbor has a donkey! I just wasn't sure if there were qty limits or rooster limits or such, kwim? We're technically in Steep Falls, little village off Standish, but it's always piled on as part of Standish even though we have our own zipcode. I meant to call today, but forgot. Had trouble finding anything on their website. Hopefully I'll remember tomorrow!

When I called the code enforcement officer for my town to see if I could keep horses on my property he asked where I was going to keep them. I so wanted to tell him they would live in the basement.

What a crazy couple of days! I ended up in the hospital yesterday having my appendix removed, but came home to some extremely cute new little hatchlings!!! Which leads me to my question. I have my sizzle hen that was sitting on eggs. One hatched, but the others dont seem to be doing anything. Do you think I would have any luck switching her remaining eggs for the chickies that hatched in the bator?

Wow, glad you're okay! I've never tried slipping chicks under a broody, but know that others do it successfully. You'll want to be very watchful, in case she doesn't accept them.
