I would also make a nice call to the town office letting them know much you appreciated the professional and courteous manner the ACO and other person handled the embarassing situation. Feedback makes them your allies in a memorable way that most people won't go out of their way to do but which establishes you as an involved citizen they can communicate with.

Agree with this. Also remember that it's good that people are concerned - not good that they're overly concerned, but I'm glad people are taking responsibility for things they (may or may not) see.

I feel your pain Widget!! Our former neighbor was a large push in our decision to move, though she wasn't harassing us out of concern for the animals. For some reason, she thought I stole her dog...Now, this woman lived on the same property I did (she lived in an apt over the garage) and had a large german shepherd, so wouldnt she have seen it if I had it? On top of that, I met the people she sold the dog to! Anyway, she was so upset with me for stealing her dog that she used to take cat poo from her cats litter box and leave it on my porch steps. She called my licensing worker and told them that she was going to take an ax and cut the heads off my chickens, and she sent the sheriff to my house repeatedly (poor guy, I felt bad for him everytime). Anytime I tried to address the situation with the former landlord, he would just tell me that she was perfectly harmless and I had nothing to worry about....Needless to say we are very happy to be away from her! And, like SCG said, atleast your neighbor seems to be acting out of genuine concern...

Good idea. It is just so frustrating. My animals have and always will come first. They get medical care before I do. I buy food for them before I buy my own. And to have some 'concerned' person try and get me in trouble just makes me so angry, mad, irritated and just plain discouraged.
Well, I agree with SCG that you do want people to report concerns but I have to say that as much as there are people who try... people aren't the best creatures overall IMO and those who don't know their donkeys from their heads aren't the most helpful. Manage the situation. The ACO and horseman clearly were satisfied with the work you are doing. Now to manage the pr. If you state you are embarrassed then that conveys you have pride in what you do and are entitled to be embarrassed. Shame is something more people need and few people actually feel. (Is that a soap box under me??) The police will start to do your work for you with the neighbor if you 'manage' it right.

There were 7 LF RIR My birds took first place pullet, second place cockerel. My first place pullet's clutch mate cockerel won Show Champion.

Congrats! Pictures, man, send pictures!! This is the same Thompson cross line you mentioned to me earlier, right??

Well I called the State this morning. Had to leave a voice mail and am still waiting for a return call. I explained the situation and what the ACO's findings were. I also added that the person who complained had indicated that she would keep taking her concerns to the next level until something happened. I voiced my concern on this and asked for an agent to contact me. I also added that I was more than willing to work with an agent to make sure I was following all the laws. All I want is for this issue to be resolved and move on with my life.

So far everyone I've talked to (co-workers and my farrier who was at the house today) have told me not to worry and that I did the right thing. All of them also added if mud was an issue than no one had better come to their houses since their animals also had mud in their pens. Funny how water and dirt combine to make mud. Maybe I should sue Mother Nature. After all it is her fault that there is a 'problem'.

Weird thing - this afternoon we found 2 eggs in our coop. Only one of our chickens is old enough to lay (our silkie) the other is only 3 months old. We had checked the coop earlier in the day and there weren't any eggs.

Sorry Widget, I have two horses here one mine ,one my daughters, there is mud everywhere, we actually hauled in truck loads of sand to put around the barn as it was so muddy I almost lost my boot in the mud lol . some people just don't get that horses are heavy animals and there hoofs can tear grass and dirt up in no time . Some people don't have a clue. Don't be discouraged by ignorant people that have no clue about horses or their care. Its alot of work . What they should be concerned about is the really abused horses out there everywhere that are starved uncared for and taken to auction for slaughter. If they are so concerned about horses then maybe they should research whats happening as I type, to many horses all through the states going without food water left to die and starve, and the rescue groups out there trying to save them and find them homes and funding needed to haul them out of the holding pens which most are disgusting and cramped for space. I went thru a simular thing with the ACO years ago when I had my appy mare, she was put down at 31 yrs old. I had a woman that lived in my town that called them on me because she went by and thought that my mare wasn't outside enough that she seem to be in her stall alot, unreal !, well the ACO checked every thing all was good and also told me the womans name whom I knew. Well the reason that she was in was because my pasture has a hill and my mare had done something to her hip, and I had the vet come out and he recommended rest and no hill along with pain med. so this is what I was doing with my mare what the vet recommended. I called the woman up, and asked her what her concern was and why didn't she just stop in and talk to me instead of calling the ACO . She felt like an idiot when I told her what was going on and appologized. Hope it all works out for you and you have the right to know who called the ACO. Everyone that has horses and farm animals are having a mud problem with all this rain, not just you. Don't let them get to you .

If animal control is called for mud, please someone notify the greater kennebec area animal control officer, because my ducks are highly abused. They insist on splashing water out of their tub and then drilling into it with their beaks, creating mud. And I just can't control them! And then mother nature had the audacity to dump rain for a few days on top of it. And because I'm a bad mom I didn't have time to scoop all the mud out and put dry dirt and sod down for them.
