I've got a big of a chicken emergency..... One of my white rocks, Florence, is wheezing and sneezing. I just noticed this tonight. I wonder if it has to do with the weather- she was out a bit today in the rain...she was sneezing a bunch when I went out to make them go in ( because it started raining again and they were not smart enough to go in on their own...) and she has her mouth opened and makes a sound when she breathes. I brought her in for the night, and she has stopped sneezing. None of the others are showing any symptoms like this...

I'd go get some VetRX..but of course it's past 5 on a sunday. Is there anything else I could do for her? Should I be worried?

I think it is good to bring her in and keep her warm, and separate from the others until you know what is going on.
I've never had to treat this, but people recommend VetRX, and if you suspect an infection, perhaps try Tylan?
I was so frustrated when I had a sick hen. Good luck with her!

So here is my update on Florence- I kept her inside last night- she is still sneezy and wheezy. I got some vetrx and rubbed her down with that. Her poo is normal- but while inside she had no interest in food.

The rest of the flock seem ok. I heard a few random sneezes, but nothing like Florence, and they are all acting exactly the same- no one is acting off. Half of them flew out of their run within 5 minutes of me letting them out ( as I was trying to put a mess of twine on top to discourage this...) I decided to see what Florence would act like if I put her out front with them- and as soon as I got her outside, she started eating with everyone else. I put some VetRX in the water- I'm not sure if this will do anything or not....

I'm still looking for a little advice too- I wonder if I should get some Tylan just incase? or wait? besides the sneezing and wheezing, there are no other signs of sickness- no droopy wings etc...???

You live near me and I have Tylan and needles so don't spend the money.

This is my opinion...
If you want pansy chickens then doctor her up to the max and see what happens.
If you want her to get tough then help her out by keeping her warm and after a few days if she is fine then you have a chicken who may have developed resistancy or just had a cold.
If you don't want to spend more on her than you did to buy her or have concerns about contaminating everyone by her returning to the flock or by her becoming a carrier for something process her.

Its a tough line, I know, but at the same time winter is coming and if they get wet and can't hack it (pun acknowledged) then you will only stress yourself for longer by keeping her suffering. I don't plan to heat the coop or bring them mugs of tea or warm biscuits either.

ACV in the water, VetRx under the wings and keep her warm.

No wifi in my coops so maybe Widget's neighbors better not visit....

and ps... my birds go out in the rain voluntarily all the time without a sneeze... ?

I keep a supply of meds on hand for those emergencies. I live in the middle of no where so getting to a store even during the week takes me alot longer then if it was just down the street. I look at it that if it's sunday or late night, I already have what I need.

Glad to hear Florence is doing a little better. I would keep a close eye on her and if she gets worse again, get her the Tylan.

One more update ( if anyone cares!)

Florence is doing muuch better this morning. She is not wheezing, she is breathing with her mouth closed, and is sneezing very little. There is a bit of sneezing going on in the coop, so I might rub everyone down with a little VetRX and call it good.

My next door neighbor came over last night. She had noticed I had put up a barrier across my driveway and posted No Tresspassing signs and wanted to know what was up. So I told her the whole story. She was outraged. The same old people really need to mind their own business that I have heard from everyone. In any case she is going to keep a closer eye on my property just in case. She loves bringing her grandson over to see the horses and knows that I take the best care of the horses and other critters that I can. Heck I even convinced her that chickens were fun.
I know that the signs I put up won't stop anyone who really wants to trespass but at least now I have a more legal leg to stand on. I would really like to put up a camera but that isn't in the budget.

Anyone else feel the earthquake? It felt like a bomb went off here. The grandfather clock was rattling and all the toys in the birds' cages were swinging wildly. I'm still shaking a bit. And the dogs are a bit keyed up too.
