Hi all! I’ve been out of the chicken game for several years and am ready to jump back in. I decided to start with making my own incubator. I really liked the look of the wine coolers converted to incubators and the practicality of them too. As providence would have it I scored this brand new wine cooler with wooden shelves on Craigslist for just $25. It was dropped during delivery and it is dented on the back corners and has at least one broken pipe rendering it currently useless as a refrigerator.
I think it will make an excellent incubator! (The guy I purchased it from gave me a surprised look when I told him I was turning it into a chicken incubator. He wasn’t sure what to think about that.) The cooler has wooden slat shelves that I am planning on lining with hardware cloth or something like that to make perfect egg shelves. I think I could even fit them to turn automatically with very little adjustment to the shelves.
I’m planning on removing the refrigerator components but want to leave the fans in place and ask my super smart handy hubby to rewire them to work with the heater.
I will probably go with a light base and a ceramic light bulb for heat. I’m hoping that he may even be able to get the cooler thermostat calibrated to the heater, but that is a long shot.
Anyway, I’m looking forward to the project!
