Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Grats to all the new birdies and their people...

Now a word of warning to all:

STEP BACK FROM THE WATERFOWL!

run, do not walk as fast as you can to your nearest bar, drink until you cannot remember what a duck is! DO not leave said bar until all danger of duck ownership has passed.

*this message is brought to you as a public service by Ralphie...

Also do not worry about alcoholism, while that can be a problem, owning waterfowl is much worse.

edited to make the print larger, it appears Perchie missed it the first time...

Your ramp is about the length/incline that I have, and I have been worrying about the chicks getting down and back up. I have some broodies setting, and worry mama will take the babies outside when I am not there and that one or more won't find their way back up. I could keep mama and babies confined for a week till the next weekend comes and I can observe and make sure everyone is safe.....or chance it.
Thoughts?
The only broody I let hatch had that problem. I kept them separated for about a week or two,
because it was freezing cold-so more risk if there was a stranding, then let them in with the flock.
She didn't take them outside for another week or so, I can't remember exactly.
But she went to 'bed' with half of them and the others were left outside cheeping.
I tried to catch them but they shot thru the fencing under the coop<rolleyes>.
I finally put their portable nest out in the run and waited until mama and all the chicks were in the nest, then covered the nest entrance and carried it back inside.
She kept them inside for a few more days then they all figured it out.
That's my only experience, your mileage may vary.

i want baby ducks.... shh dont tell any one

hey, everyone!!!! Perchie wants baby ducks!!!!! BABY DUCKS!!!!!
Um, either I got an egg marked wrong or we need to schedule maternity and paternity tests for this little dude...

Looks like a Naked Neck from where I'm sitting. If not, I may have to put him back until he's done.
Blooie, you better get busy knitting a little scarf. Will it be pink, or blue? Got any teeny tiny lil knitting needles? Where did these eggs come from??? Not to worry, in spite of their ugliness, I hear that they are friendly, awesome layers, and will be great in the stew pot when their laying days are done.

PERCHIE WANTS BABY DUCKS! DON'T TELL ANYONE BUT PASS IT ON!!!!

Leave it to my friend LG to find the bright side of things! I won the eggs in a BYC contest. When I pulled him and the egg shell out of the hatcher I double-checked what was marked on the top of the egg. I think AUS stands for Aussie and not NN, right? It doesn't matter - Jenny is thrilled. She saw photos of them one day and she was so excited when one of the eggs I got was marked NN - with my luck there's something else in that one!

Ok I want Muscovy and Runners.... Muscovy for eggs and meat.... Runners because they are so dang cute...... Beaker 1, Beaker 2, Beaker 3... they are also good egg layers.

Each require minimal water.... face wash place and a bit for cooling off in the summer. and I can grow duck weed for em in with the Tilapia.

Housing will work in my new layout too.

I hate to break the news but the only thing that changes as the get older is the SIZE of the poop!

Perhaps "Poop de Grass" would be a better screen name

Finally paying my dues! 6 happy, healthy ducklings love their MHP!

And they all love playing outside a little too!

Too dang cute!!! And proof that it works for ducklings as well as it does for chicks.

Um who gave you that BA egg? Someone doing weird BA/NN crosses or something? Echo had WAY more neck feathers on her AFTER the fox almost took her.

Tilapia? We had that for dinner last night! I want Tilapia!!!!

Of course DD1 wouldn't abide us eating them either, not if we raised them here. Same as any other creature.

Love seeing the little duckings under MHP! So cute!

I went out and snagged the two little Bantams out of their pen to put in with the new Naked Neck that hatched last night. He was so doggone noisy being by himself that I thought some company would help, plus they could show him how to eat and drink, and where to warm up. They did. He's learning. I figured their smaller size would be less intimidating. It is. I thought they'd be quieter. THEY'RE NOT! Now I remember why I brood chicks outdoors!!! Good grief!! The Bantams are NOT happy being inside.

Got an Easter Egger egg rolling around in the incubator, so when he gets added to the mix they are all going outside!! Brother!!
