Managing chickens.smells,flies etc help

Update: crazy lady did report me and has claimed i have loads of rats in my yard with my chickens, so now they want pest control and environmental health/ local council ppl out here in 2 weeks time to have a look. So needless to say I'm stressed out again my birds look like they are molting plus now red mites have exploded and I'm stuggling to kill the lil blighters, 2 of my poor girls have wriggled out of their hen saddles and I can't find them couple that an the fact with molting and I'm sure the mites ain't helping so those 2 look really rough my male look bad but believe that's from the molt. The only rough looking ones are my year and year and a half olds no one else.

I wonder if by UK law this coupled with her crazy outburst a few weeks back could be seen as harassment as it's causing stress etc to me and my family..

Defo will ask them when they come. As there is no real reason for her to act like a miserable old cow towards someone that has done nothing to her.. think if I see her son an I'll tell him what's happened and see if he can write a letter explaining about his crazy miserable mother if she is the one complaining (which I'm 99.99% sure she is).

Seriously tho how much of a miserable busy body are ppl to aact like this towards someone that has never done anything to them. Just have to keep telling myself I'm in the UK and not the USA wish it was tho the UK has some pretty stupid laws worse yet constant/ bad offenders get slaps on the wrist while decent ppl are basically made to suffer and face harsher punishment for minor petty things compared to life long criminals. Sad really and ppl wonder why I want my own country.

First - at a year and a half, they all seem to want to drop trow at once! I guess UK chickens have the same nasty sense of timing (or maybe it's a vicious sense of humor) as they do in the US. Our County Fair Best-in-Show rooster dropped all his tail feathers, save one, two weeks before our State Fair. The little bugger!
Y'know - it's no different here across The Pond with the "Crazies." They're everywhere. Sure would be nice, though if crazy people did all stick to one place. At least then we'd have somewhere to send 'em! Take a deep breath ... then spit it out at the goof down the street. It's a shame you're not a dragon. That breath could pack a real punch!

OK, so you have 2 weeks to get everything in order. Can you get spray or powder for the mites? Get some good information and maybe pictures of chickens and molting so if they say anything, you can educate them. You've got this. Just get everything as clean as you can. Do you have Ziplock baggies? Put colored water in them and hang them around your coop windows and doors. They repel flies. (As long as the sun is shining, anyway.) You can do this.

Fly strips and bug zappers! And put out some sugar water or a rotten melon , anything that would draw flies ... under the crazy lady's porch! Nah - just a fun thought ... but you could put something in her trash bin and leave the lid cocked! (NOTE: insert meme pic of "evil grin and hand rubbing, accompanied by the sound byte of a maniacal giggle" here)

To be fair I wish I was a dragon maybe then she would pack it in. Or I could at least torch her lawn. Seriously tho she is a bitter miserable woman who likes to play victim I now see why her husband left her and ran for the hills.

I have smite (mite killer brand here in the UK) have their spray and have their de powder I have some big fly traps that u put water in to get the bait to work I have one of them and what little fly problem I had is almost gone. My biggest issues are all the building stuff my husband has, the mites and the birds molting. Think I'll have the hubby make another 2 small coops one for my older chicks and one for my rooster and heck maybe another one for any sick ones what ya all think? Have plenty of wood and plyboard even sheep wool that I could use as installation in it along with some linoleum flooring to make it easier to clean.

I also hope it don't rain as my yard is void of grass so I don't want a mud pit when these ppl come.

Went out to check on my flock (need to do a count up and report to DEFRA if I have over 50). all my chickens seemed fine bright alert and it looks like new feathers are coming in on my worse girls and some of my other girls already have feather starting to cover bald patches.

But like I said they all seemed fine except 1 Freya my speckledy girl she looked fine yesterday but now one side of her face is swollen I don't seen anything in her eyes but her eye looks really weepy and it looks swollen near her beak (I'll try and get a picture) and suggestions? last thing I want is a sick chicken!

Update: Took chicken to vet (finally got in and she was suppose to be a emergency case and should have been admitted sooner) vet was unsure whats wrong with her I told him it looked like/sounded like corzya said he would have to charge me like £150 for a test to confirm if it was and he said he could give nothing to treat her until the test came back and just to put her back with the others and keep a eye on her til the test came back which should be about a week or 2. Said no thanks to the test and that I would take her home and make her last days comfy I did ask him if they indeed knew how to treat chickens he said yes but for some reason I doubt it specially in seeing he said just to put her back with the rest of the flock!

I did have some antibiotics left over from my dog and I found you can give it to chickens so I ground up a tablet put a small amount in her drinking water now she is in a rabbit cage in my bathroom with her antibiotic water and some layers along with some fresh veg, fruit and herbs and she looks like she is improving!

The council person and their pest control guy came yesterday. Pest guy said he could find no signs of any pests specially the rats crazy lady complained about and said she saw them and lots of them he said he can find no evidence of any rats being here what so ever and that with all my rat traps and how I kept every thing I was more then covering myself and making sure to reduce the chances of rats he was impressed with my set up. Council person was happy with everything and I asked if there was anything I could improve that I was not trying to already and she asked if I could build a small rooster hut in 2 weeks and try if for a few weeks (a month) to see if there might be any reduction in crowing if not then I have tried everything that and my rooster is not a nuisance noise just merely annoying to some.

I have over 50 (roughly 70-80 now) and asked if I was going to reduce my numbers. I said I would like too reduce my numbers down to no more then 50 but said if I can't get rid of the hens I would keep them but the remaining roos would go as I was not going to put up with more then 1 roo and did not except my neighbors to either and said it would take me no more then hopefully 3 months to get rid of the rest of the roos (about 6). She asked if I thought of my chickens as a business I said no I was just a hobby breeder and any extra's I sold were to good homes and that the money went straight back to the chickens for feed, bedding etc and that if I wanted to run it as a business I would have gotten the permits etc I needed which I at the present time I'm a hobby breeder and there is no real income from selling the chicks/hens.

I also asked if there was a law on the restriction of how many chickens I could keep because as far as I knew there where no restrictions on the amount I could keep hence why I said I would keep the hens as their eggs are always welcome. she agreed there were no restrictions on how many I could keep and that I could easily house, feed and free range the amount I have now and apologized for making it seem like I needed to get rid of them as if there was a restriction on the amount I could have. I also informed her I was registered with DEFRA and informed them (DEFRA) that my flock size increased.

With that she said she was more then happy with everything that I am going about it the right way and that I have worked with them and have been nothing but pleasant and respectful etc with them. They did agree that they would put a note about issues with crazy lady and said if she makes a complaint (or if she was the one to do all of it to start with) that the harassment and other issues with her were noted on file with them and that would be considered with what was found in my favor yesterday. Just asked that I do make a roo house in 2 weeks and try it that's all they want from me!

Don't you just LOVE it when a plan comes together?! Stick to your guns and stand up for yourself! You're doing everything right and going about it the right way. That's Great!
You'll know pretty quickly if Crazy Lady was your culprit. She'll likely sulk for awhile before she pesters you ... or find another neighbor to vent her rage upon. Either way, ... "Ya done Good!"

I use fans in my coop and yard to discourage flies, as well as using PDZ. I also use a fly trap that you fill with water and hang it on a hook from the ceiling. There is something very stinky in there that flies seem to love. Just remember not to walk into the trap filled with water, stink and floating dead flies.YUMMY!!!!!
