ROFLMAO. So funny. (must remember not to take fatty baked goods from neighbors now, just in case they are fattening ME up...)

And From Domino7 :"The economy's bad? It depends on your outlook I guess. I think people constantly saying it's bad causes fear, and it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. I just live my life the best I can, and don't worry too much about the future."

AMEN to you both! The fear being perpetuated in this country is, well, terrifying!

PS - I just brought some banana bread over to my neighbors....

I don't think we should pretend that things will be fixed without some turmoil. It's more than just fear, there are serious underlying problems. That being said, if you're prepared you shouldn't be scared, and worrying never did anybody a bit O good. Like others have said already, do what you can now. Become more self sufficient and stock up. I mean, a 20 lb. bag of rice only costs 10 bucks, why not have one?

I am very happy I logged on here today because, for us, the economy has been very difficult, the weather has sucked, and the idea of fattening up your neighbors to eat them just tickled my funny bone. I needed a chuckle...

There are simple steps to take to ensure each of us is safe regarless of what happens in the economy:

1) Spend less...save more (get out of debt)
2) Understand wants versus needs-focus on the needs
3) Hope for the best but prepare for the worst
4) Become more self suffient-everyone can plant a tomato, herb garden, small fruit trees in containers-no land required, can do it in an apartment
5) Don't expect the government or anyone else to provide for you-YOU are responsible for YOU.

We have 10 acres, 4 stock ponds, 9 chickens, 2 horses and 3 calves waiting to be delivered. We recycle/reuse everything we can...almost nothing goes in the trash, all scraps/leftovers go to the dogs, chickens, fish in the pond or the compost. Yes I have guns and ammo, protection and ability to hunt. Humankind has survived for how long without all this hitech and global infrastucture and we can continue to do.

Just my 2 cents.

Most people who are on BYC have already made the first step to self sufficiency.
Yes, the world does struggle financially but not as much as it is publicized. The bad part is that this sort of economy always triggers the longing for socialist ideas that are very appealing to those who need a government to depend upon while the many power grubbing politicians manipulate their minds.
On the other hand, a struggling economy will refresh the survival of the fittest in America and new ideas, and brilliant minds will be born again from this political and economic uncertainty. I am looking at the current situation to be more of a jump start to a great future and not a car with a dead engine. It can be pretty hard for those who lost their job, and I‘m sure depressing, but the right attitude can change any bad luck into a future opportunity.

I would say that I'm jealous of your place - until I read about this one.

I wish I had acreage but will have to do with what I have here. To the OP, make yourself as self-sufficient as you can given your resources. Grow a garden (in ground, raised beds, or containers), plant some fruit trees, shrubs, or vines (strawberries are very prolific!), make your own compost for fertilizer (I get the straw/bunny poop from a local shelter for my compost pile), learn to can, pickle, and dehydrate any excess foods, trade with your neighbors for things you can't grow or do, and stock up on whole grains for you and your birds. Also, be sure to have a survival library for skills that you may not have but might need knowledge of in the future. And my advice is not not put trust in anybody or "thing" other than yourself as you control your destiny. With preparation, you (and I) can make it through whatever comes our way!
