Many people getting lay-offs yet?

I was thinking "Old husband", but i like "Other husband" better.

As a nurse, I'm pretty recession-proof (thank goodness) but I've noticed there's not a lot of nursing jobs to choose from now. I'd like to find a different job, but the selection is poor indeed. Many of my clients are struggling to find work, and the majority of them are having a hard time affording food.

My DH was layed off in 2006 He worked for a large hospital corporation. He had 24 years in that corporation. They decided they didnt need his shift anymore. Then when he tried to get unemployment they fought it,said he was fired. Anyway he won the case and at least collected unemployment. He tried for two years to find ajob but they don't really want to hire someone whos 60. He finally had to take a job at Walmart when his unemployment ran out. At least that company hires the older people. No job is secure.

I'm in the healthcare field. I could work 80 hours a week if I wanted to. There's probably 50 nursing jobs available at our hospital and lots of allied health jobs too.
If you have kids near college age or you want to make a career switch - check into healthcare careers.

My wife is an RN and I left the field 6 years ago. However, I will always keep all my cert's and license in place in case I have to go back. I've never been anywhere that an RN couldn't walk into any hospital and work as many or as few hours as they want. With baby boomer's keeping up demand for healthcare and that average age of RNs in the country over 45, the demand for new RNs looks to be solid into the future.

I've been trying to talk out youngest daugter into it (10th grade) but no luck. I don't know of any other profession where you can go to school for as little as two years and make a career like nursing. Tough work but can be very gratifying.

Stopped by the store today for bread and talked to the asst manager. We chat every time I'm in there. They've laid off some part timers and cut back hours for others. She was really angry because she said she doesn't need them any less, the number of customers hasn't gone down, they're just buying less.

On the nursing thing. I have whole classrooms full of nurses in training. I am afraid that a glut is going to replace the shortage we had five years ago. I still don't know any nurses who are unemployed involuntarily, but there are regional differences....

Welcome to the 2nd great depression folks.

Some say that food will soon become legal tender.

There is a slow motion run on all banks now. There are those who say that the dollar will soon be worthless. That's why food will be used for trade.

I don't know that I buy that completely. We are getting a safe and taking some of our $$ out anyway.

We are also buying extra flour, cases of soup etc...

The bailout will only slow the fall a tiny bit.

Some economists say this will last for many years.

If taxes are raised, the free fall will begin sooner.

BO says he will only raise taxes on those who make $250,000 or more. If he does that, lay off will increase rapidly because small business employers will no longer be able to afford employees. It's that simple.

Yes, I'm kind of urging my daughter(11th grade) to get into nursing. You can't really beat being an RN in 2 years and making close to 50G a year.
In my profession(Medical Technologist or Clinical Laboratory Scientist depending on which end of the country you are) we need a 4 yr degree + 1 yr clinical intern and don't make quite as much as an RN. Jobs in my field are always available though and you can work as many hours as you want(no mandating yet thank goodness).

I got laid off last week, I worked as a yard guy at the hardware store. We have had almost no one buying lumber or other building supplies in the last 3-4 weeks. I think it also has to do with the suburban sprawl out here slowing down. I went all around town going into every store for applications. I got 2 and they arent hiring, they just always take applications.

Write your congressman and Senators and tell them to vote NO on the bailout.

Even the illegal aliens are leaving Arizona for greener pastures (AND WORK) in Mexico.

All the bailout does is postpone the inevitable... a greater crash and a deeper depression than the one in the 30s.

Watch the sell off on Wall Street tomorrow.

Continue to watch the slow motion run on banks.

Got cash on hand?????

You could see the DOW hit 6,000 by Tuesday at close.
