Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

It was really neat to see so many Marans in one place! After all the people you normally meet who say, "What's a Marans"? LOL!! I only drove up for a few hours on Saturday and drove back in the late afternoon due to my dh's working hours and all. It was about a 6 hour drive each way.
I had no birds or eggs in the show but I really wanted to see what the Marans all looked like in person because normally, you don't see that many Marans in the shows. Hopefully after they qualify there will be more. Glad you are enjoying the pics

Fantastic! I did notice on the coop cards they listed "Maran" as the breed instead of Marans. I bet it really was a sight to see. I grew up showing poultry from as young as I can remember and after 10 years of living in a big city, I'm back out in the country and want to get back to showing. Its so encouraging to see the breed I've fallen in love with have such a strong representation and was received so well. I found myself checking here and the yahoo group often to see if there were updates from the show.
In your opinion, on the birchens, were they smaller than the other color varieties? I've found that to be the case with quite a few people's birchens, including mine. I'm working on building up their size slowly but surely, but was just curious what you saw.
And that first pic you posted of what I think you said was a White red...or Red white...I had no idea they had a Red Pyle type equivalent in Marans.
Thanks again for all your effort in making it to the show and letting us have a sneak peek into how it was.

Yes the birchens did seem small but there were only a couple there so very hard to tell. Size wise I was very impressed with some of the Black Copper hens. OMG some those girls were just huge and fuffy...really put mine to shame LOL!! You really wanted to 'squeeze the Charmin' on some of them!

Wow... Did you get pictures of the winning birds as well as the DQ's... ?? I have a pair of blues and a Blue Copper that was there that I haven't seen pix of yet... Still waiting..... Did you happen to catch em ????

Here is a pic of the Marans table with some goodies on it. I had to get a egg color chart and a mug.

Haha...I bet some of those girls were impressive, I do love the big fluffy girls. I would think I'd probably just about die if I were to go out to my stalls and find an egg like the one in your avatar tho

On that photo #31...The hen you said you thought won overall for Marans, can you tell me what color her eyes are? No need to repost a zoomed in pic, I was just wondering if you could see it on your end. I don't know if its my screen or not, but they look darker.

What is a side sprig? I wish someone would write out what all these definitions and abbreviations mean. DH means Dumb Husband? MIL means "Moms I'd Like to"? Laugh all you want, but how are less experienced people supposed to know? This site has so much special code that it is often hard to understand. Nowhere else have I heard of livestock manure referred to as "Applesauce"...there should be a thread in the index on "BYC Abbreviations And What They Mean". I guess that until that happens I will remain stupid, uninformed, and very frustrated.

Geebs I wasn't able to get photos of every bird but just kinda went through and got what I could lol. There are some blue Marans pics coming up, I am not sure if I took pics of all the blues though. My teen dd actually decided to come with us and kept trying to drag me off to see the call ducks LOL! I knew there was a reason she actually wanted to come to the 'chicken show'.

Mtn Mel. Sorry I am just learning all this stuff myself. A side sprig is a odd growth on the comb that sticks out to the side. On some of my pics you couldn't see it because it was probably on the opposite side. I apologize for that. The isles were kinda narrow between most of the cages and there were people that needed to get through and some pushing strollers etc so I tried not to sit and drool at all the cages for too long LOL! I did go back through several times and some of the birds were still not wanting to pose. Poor things were probably tired and overwhelmed by all the noise, people, birds etc.

MIL is mother in law, dh is dear husband

You should write a comical book on abbreviations I bet it would be funny.

Mel,

Don't feel alone, it took me awhile to figure out the abbreviations too!

Side Sprig: A stub, spikey protuberance off the side of the comb. A wart like sprig on the side of the comb, may be big or small

DH = Dear Husband (you pesimist, you! lol)

MIL = Mother in Law

Hey Mel,

a side sprig is basically an extra spike or knobish kind of growth that shows up on the comb where it should be smooth and flat. On some of the cocks combs it will also show up at the back part of the comb having what looks like a group of spikes...sometimes in a more circular grouping, when there should just be one. I'll see if I can find any pics or links for you to have a visual of them. They are a pain to deal with..as far as breeding them out of the line, in my opinion.
