Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Thanks!

Chicks are very hopeful and fun! I posted a photo of Chloe a few pages back and a photo of her mom on the next page. Chloe is one of my Blue Copper gals. I just love her but she has a little attitude.....I know better than to try to take an egg out from under her I can tell you that.

My head cuckoo roo has developed the same goldness. I have been told it could be due to the sun or corn? Is that true?

Interesting enough, I have 20 week cockerel from my head roo, and his coloring shows no gold. The cockerel has very white and black barring. I am assuming if my goal is a dark cuckoo marans (not a gold or silver), I should select for breeding purposes, those without gold undertones or leakage? I don't know if I worded this all correctly, hopefully you all can get the drift of what I am asking...

Ok...I just went back and checked out the photos of your girls...they are nice! That mother of hers looks like she's quite the tank. I have a pullet that sometimes gets to showing attitude too...she sure knows how to put her weight behind her beak to defend her eggies. It is not fun to be on the receiving end

OK.... I have a few minute to catch up, so starting where I left off. lol

Yep, I also love Spring and all the new babies. Have mixed emotions this Spring because I will miss my cows, goats, sheep, ducks, and turkeys now more than ever. Especially the sheep and goat babies. Those were always the most fun. I have to admit though..... these Marans chicks are just soooo cute!!! I heard DH this morning in front of the bator saying, "Hi my little babies. Daddy's here."

Haha...that's too funny....another addict in the works over there with that hubby of yours?

I totally can relate to having mixed feelings about spring...would be hard really to know how to try to fill in that missing part of life, ya know?
Yikes...gotta leave for work...I'll be back later to see how everyone is doing!

Actually I think he's a closet addict.

He really Loves all the chickens, he just won't admit him. When we lived on the farm all of our chickens were free ranged. When he was out doing the farm chores the chickens would come up to him (roosters included) and squat next to him so he would pick them up. He would pick them up and walk around with them under his arms. He pets them, talks to them, and kisses them, but still will not admit he loves them.

I might have missed it, but what's the progress on your hatch now? I told a friend today that I feel weird that I don't have a hatch going this week. I am thinking I should get notice of chicks hatching for me tho tomorrow...and should be shipped out Wed I'd guess! I'm getting more excited all the time. I've got the brooder all set up for them and ready to go.

The little chick is still having a real hard time walking and I noticed his little foot does look deformed.

I will take pics of all of them tomorrow and you guys can tell me what you think. I didn't get a chance today with all the commotion going on with my kids and their activities. It has been such a long day with baseball and dance classes.

Congrats on your pips and chickie. I'm guessing as I keep reading I'll probably read that you had some hatch.

I have 6 in the brooder and then the one I put back in the incubator. Don't want to put it with the rest of them until it's looking a little better. I'm scared the others will pick on it.

Woohoo! on your new chicks coming soon.
